Freddie Roach enjoys a laugh

Freddie Roach, the ace American trainer of Manny Pacquiao, has already voiced his concern over possible low blows from Miguel Cotto in the super-fight in Las Vegas on November 14.

The business around protector cups is serious indeed, although Roach once recalled a lighter moment relating to when he was in James Toney’s corner some years ago.

Roach told the story during an interview in Johannesburg in May 2004, when he was here with Virgil Hill. He said he arrived in Las Vegas with Toney to fight Evander Holyfield in October 2003 – having forgotten Toney’s protector cup in Los Angeles. Toney was unaware of the missing kit!

Roach bumped into Hill and asked to borrow his cup for Toney, but the problem was that Hill’s was a different colour to Toney’s. “One was red and the other green,” Roach told me in the interview, “but I hoped he wouldn’t notice, that he’d be preoccupied with the fight. In the dressing room I tossed it to him and he looked at it and said: ‘what the f*** is this?’”

Toney, wearing the cup, stopped Holyfield in the ninth round. After the fight, when Roach told him who the cup belonged to, Toney joked: “I hope I didn’t catch something.”

Hill didn’t want the cup back and it ended up in Roach’s Hollywood gym.

May the best pound 4 pound boxer wins!
Manny = Pound for Pound (pounds his opponents)
Miguel = Pound for Pound (pounds the balls of his opponents)

No need for any protector cup for as long as Manny sticks to the game plan and everything will fall in place. Cotto will succumb to Pacquiao’s supertyphoon power punches.

Roach is tactically wise, trying to transcend Cotto that he must go with Manny’s nuts otherwise he’ll never win.

is it just me or is there something disconcerting about roach’s pronouncements of a 1st rd KO of cotto by the pacman.

while it was impressive the way roach called manny’s last 3 fights exactly the way it came to pass would it not be reasonable to think that if subsequent opponents were not impressed back then, they would surely be taking it seriously now and prepping for every strategy roach professes to employ. exactly what a good general going to battle would do.

still, roach tells the enemy i’m flying-in my bombers from the west, i’m rolling in heavy armor on highway 101 then i’m dropping my paratroopers 10 miles behind enemy lines. what do we expect the other team to do after pacquiao & co. did exactly what they said they would do in their last 3 fights? There’s the old saying “loose lips sinks ships” and i’m afraid freddie’s hubris can only spell trouble for pacquiao.

it might be pretty impressive for roach should he pull it off and may even earn him a 4th trainer of the year award and would certainly be great advertisement for his services, but i feel it diminishes MP chances for a KO/win rather than add to it. If there is conflict between his personal agenda vs. his professional job, the latter should take precedence since he is being paid handsomely for it. I feel Freddie should hold his cards close to his vest.

furthermore, isn’t this a disincentive for buying PPV when you know the fight is only going to last 1 round? surely, that could only hurt MP’s earnings.

finally, I really like the guy but I think he’s wrong this time and somebody needs to tell him to knock it off!!!

I suggest for coach to bring a spare, in case of any protective malfunction :-)

jinky dont you worry, roach will protect the pound for pound nuts. he will let manny use virgil hill’s cup for good luck. lets hope toney dont have crabs.

protector cup would not be an issue on this fight , as Cotto is a good body puncher. He would surely hit the body not the balls.
