Despite losing the decision, Whitaker gave Oscar De La Hoya a boxing lesson

Southpaw boxing is a relatively recent phenomenon. For nearly a century, many trainers automatically turned left-handers into orthodox fighters.

That’s partly why it took so long for a lefty to win the world heavyweight title – Michael Moorer in the 1990s.

But fans have witnessed some great southpaw fighters over the past few decades, among them Marvin Hagler, Pernell Whitaker, Naseem Hamed, Joe Calzaghe and Manny Pacquiao.

On the one extreme you had Hagler, an aggressive fighter who stalked his opponents in the ring.

On the other side you had defensive Whitaker, a brilliant mover who wasn’t appreciated in his time. ‘Sweat Pea’, as he was known, won world titles at lightweight, light-welter, welterweight and even light-middleweight.

But he was robbed against Julio Cesar Chavez, given a draw in a fight he clearly won. Against Oscar De La Hoya, Whitaker deserved nothing less than a draw.

As for the two Englishmen, Calzaghe recently retired undefeated, while Hamed was great up until he got beaten by Marco Antonio Barrera.

But could Manny Pacquiao be the greatest southpaw of all time – you decide!

You people are f***** if you think Manny is the greatest southpaw of all time

Marvin Hagler defended the MW crown 14 times all by KO except for Duran

Pernell Whitaker is arguably the most skilled boxer to ever lace up a glove, should have gone undefeated for the first 15 years but he got robbed twice against Chavez, Oscar and Ramirez….he beat some of the biggest names in the sport and his only legit losses came after he was old and on drugs

Manny’s better than Joe and Hamed ill give you that….he’s a great fighter fighitng at weights he doesnt even belong in which is incredible but he’s no Hagler and he’s certainly aint no Sweat Pea

to Mr. David Isaacson: good day to you mr. boxing writer we all filipinos are ain’t gonna sue you for being sometimes biass in favor for your fellow “american fighters” but for posting here this non sense “QUESTION OF WHO IS THE GREATEST SOUTH PAW OF ALL TIME” is totally B***U***LL****S***H****I****T!!! ideep in your heart as a human being you already knew it of who is the greatest…but because you are an american of course? you’d like it to give it to your co american citizen instead to the real GREATEST FIGHTER/SOUTH PAW OF ALL TIME: and that is non ohter than “MANNY PACMAN PACQUIAO”…the americans are very well known for having so much proud and being a SELF PROCLAIMED citizen..so its not new from us that you being an americans are only seeing and giving the most complementary praised to all your so called american greatest fighters!!! but it is clearly that ALMIGHTY GOD, put PACQUIAO in the mainstream to proclaim him once again specially to those who do not believed in GOD and to learn at least how to accept the reality of being a losser!!! LOVE IT…or HATE IT…but this is the real world now. (Reply – before you file your legal papers, please bear in mind that David is NOT American)

Manny Pacquiao for now is the greatest southpaw of all time. But that is only true until some southpaw boxer in the future gets more belts than Manny and in more divisions. For anyone to be the greatest of all time, they should transcend the sport. Ali will always be the greatest for making a famous boxer rich in one bout. De la Hoya will always be the greatest for introducing Pay Per View. To be permanently known as the greatest, one should find a way to transcend the sport.

Pac is terrific, but he certainly isn’t as prolific as Marvelous Hagler nor does he have the silky skills of Sweetpea. Offensively, Hagler was better than Sweetpea, but defensively, there is no southpaw that is worth mentioning in the same breath as Sweetpea. Pacman is definitely up there among the greatest southpaws, but at best, he is third. Hagler is no.1, followed by Whittaker.

To ben anajao…
…. I am not american, but this isn’t about citiizenship. Boxing is boxing. I agree that too many times, Americans do tend to vote along lines that they perceive to be patriotic. I’ll give you that much. Don’t you think however, that by proclaiming Pacman as the greatest ever, that you might be guilty of the same thing?
Perhaps this question should be left to the neutrals (non-Filipinos and non-Americans) to decide.
As a neutral myself, I think Hagler is the greatest southpaw.
I don’t think that the Golden Boy is among the top 5 greatest boxers in any of the weight divisions he fought in, but he was a good boxer. Transcending the sport is fine, but you have to dominate or exhibit unparalleled skill for an entire generation to be considered among the greatest. Ali achieved this with his lightning hand speed, fancy footwork, and by winning the thriller in Manilla as well as the rumble in the jungle. Ali has a cult following the world over. De La Hoya is pretty much known among boxing enthusiasts only (that is outside of America).

Marvin might have defended his belt 14 times but only at his most comfortable weight. If Pacquiao stay only at his comfortable weight he could defend his belt more than Hagler. But Pacman take it to another level starting only at 106lbs and now he is fighting at 147 lbs.Now can anyone dig it or have done it?NO ONE…Now he will be making a history as a 7 division title holder which no one has done…

If Pacquiao wins his bout with Cotto and became the only 7th division title holder he will definitely be hailed as the greatest of all time without regards whether he is a lefty or not…For now he stands tall above all this lefty..he has fought many division and won them with aplomb and has face many future hall of famers than any of these lefty. And lastly he fought as if there is no tommrow

hey writer, what are the criteria in order for us to consider a southpaw boxer is ther greatest of all time? Is the considered greatest if he won many bouts or unbeaten or he makes history by beating opponents in different weights? (reply – it’s a subjective topic, so you may decide the criteria. There’s no right or wrong answer, although personally, I’d go for Whitaker)

Pacquiao vs Cotto

I tend to believe so although I have not seen any other fighter who is as deadly as Pacquiao or deadlier than him. Manny’s punches are too fast and very unpredictable, things which usually confuses his foes in the ring. I saw the Zab Judah-Cotto fight and I noticed that Judah showed some similar styles of Pacquiao and he almost KOed Cotto right on the 1st round. If only Judah was as fast as Pacquiao, he could have KOed the low-blow artist Cotto.
