Hekkie Budler with one of his pythons
At just 1.60m, junior-flyweight prospect Hekkie Budler is shorter than all seven of his constricting snakes – six pythons and a somewhat aggressive anaconda.
The longest – nearly double his height at 3m – is an albino python, while the other six snakes are around 2.5m each. Add them together and you get 18 metres, which is 11 times longer than Budler!
Feeding them could get quite expensive so he’s planning to provide them with home-grown food. “I’m going to get four rabbits and breed them, even though my younger sister won’t like it,” says the fighter, 21.
Budler recently bought the anaconda and four pythons to add to the two pythons he’s owned for years. “The anaconda is very aggro,” he said with a hiss to mimic the serpent’s spitting sound. “I don’t know why – I think the guy I got it from didn’t handle it much so it’s not used to it.”
The boxer is to move in with trainer Colin Nathan for the final week before he fights in Johannesburg next Saturday night. But his snakes will have to remain at home – Nathan is petrified of them.
