Bruce Lee was always in great shape

There's never an ounce of fat on Manny Pacquiao
Many readers have commented on the upcoming Manny Pacquiao v Miguel Cotto fight on November 14.
Among the more memorable messages is this one, from a Chinese fan: “NICE PACMAN YOUR GREAT…FROM CHINA PEOPLE..YOU LIKE BRUCE LEE HERE IN OUR PLACE….”
The comparison is interesting, because Pacquiao and Lee have at least one thing in common – both were born in the house of Sagittarius (Lee’s birthday was November 27 1940, and Pacquiao’s is December 17 1978).
At a stretch it’s worth noting that two of Pacquiao’s greatest wins have occurred within a fortnight of what would have been Lee’s birthday – his TKO win over Marco Antonio Barrera (November 15, 2003) and his third-round KO of Erik Morales (November 18, 2006). Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Pacquiao agreed to fight Cotto on November 14!
Lee was famous for his abilities as a martial arts fighter, as well as being a movie star, but it seems he tried his hand at boxing too – with great success of course.
According to Wikipedia, Lee won the 1958 Hong Kong Inter-School Boxing Championship by incorporating tactics from the martial art, Wing Chun.
Lee died at the age of 32 on May 10, 1973, more than five years before Pacquiao was born.
Any die-hard fan of Bruce Lee such as me will immediately likened the speed and skills of Filipino Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao with the legendary martial artist. Bruce Lee’s philosophy is about flexibility which, in his own words, ‘the ability to adapt like water’.
“Empty your mind, be formless like water, if you put water into a cup it becomes the cup, put water into a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow, water can crash. Be water my friend.”
Manny Pacquiao has the ability to adapt to every opponent whether big or small as seen in two of his last fights in the form of a much bigger Oscar Dela Hoya and a slightly bigger Ricky Hatton in which Pacquiao demolished both of this elite fighters making them look like amateurs. Bruce Lee on the other hand has demonstrated his real-life skills in his film ‘Game of Death’ with a much taller opponent in the form of Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Manny Pacquiao has proven Bruce Lee’s philosophy that the smaller guy can overpower a bigger and taller opponent. In Filipino layman’s cry ‘wala sa laki yan pare!’. The expanded wingspan (scapular muscles) of both Manny Pacquiao and Bruce Lee came from decades of dedicated training. In Filipino layman’s term, those wingspan is known as ‘palikpik’. (see my link website for comparison photos)
It’s confirmed that Manny Pacquiao is also a fan of Bruce Lee as seen in videos inside his apartment suite in Los Angeles with a huge poster/painting of the legendary Bruce Lee hanging at his wall.
Being flexible like water not only suits all kinds of sports but is also suited in the game called LIFE ! Be water my friends.
Lee’s popularity was brought about by hollywood movies, while Pacquiao
popularity is his succesful fights in an upward trend in terms of weight category. The two personality can be describe in two word reality and make balieve.
what an article…where is the comparison? ohhh common can you write that make sense and pls your title of this article is like garbage..
is it ok to announce the welcome intro of michael buffer using filipino laguage rather than spanish the the damas and caballero to use as binibini at mga ginoo in tagalog words
YES! PACMAN IS LIKE BRUCE LEE! I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS TOO! I HAD COMMENTED ON VARIOUS BOXING SITES BEFORE ABOUT PACMAN BEING LIKE BRUCE LEE IN MANY WAYS! HIS HEIGHT AND PHYSIQUE RESEMBLES THAT OF THE LATE LEGEND IN MARTIAL ARTS! LEE BEATS BIG TIME FIGHTERS JUST LIKE PACMAN! SO YES I DO OUR PACMAN IS MUCH LIKE THE GREAT BRUCE LEE!!!
Yes, both of them have become Asia’s best icons and legends. and i wish Pacman will promote health and fitness to the youth even before his retirement instead of going into politics.
martial arts is in essence an illusion it is a way to get your oponent to think twice about how he is going to be attacked.. bruce lee is a far cry from what manny does, manny pacquiao is the real thing not some artist who appears indestructible in movies.
Sparrow, you under estimate the power of pacquiao. Just watch the previous figths of the pacman and you will realize the true power of pacman.
Cotto vs Mayweather next! Forget Pacquio, he’ll loss to Cotto anyway. After Nov. 14, the noisy Pacland website will finally be closed. It’s time for Latinos to dominate — courtesy of new P4P King Cotto! Who among the best will be great enough to fight Cotto? 1. P4P#2 Mayweather would be best, but I think he is a coward. 2. A returning Margarito would also be good for Cotto’s revenge but without illegal handwraps, of course! 3. Mosley & Clottey – well, they were already defeated. But maybe they just want to be TKOed the next time. 4. WBC welter champ Berto – yes, for Cotto’s unification of the welterbelts. 5. De La Hoya? Maybe not anymore. He might not just sit anymore in his corner. He might be killed in the ring in the 1st round. I think nobody else can stand up to Cotto in the welterweight division. He’ll be P4P King until retirement and boxing’s hall-of-fame greatest fighter of all time!!! Hail Cotto!!!
Both Fighters, Lee and Pacquiao, are great good men and both are ASIANS. Why we, Asians, would argue of who are good and great? Why do compare these fighters? Be kind to everyone guys……. be like Bruce and Manny…. be like water my friends…
@sparrow: really? manny has no power??? what planet are you from? surely, if manny has no power then it might be that hatton was just acting from manny’s blow.
@latinoboxingfan: if you’re that sure and confident, let’s have a bet? $1k for manny here. 1:1 match. and what’s the fuss about this “latinos to dominate” thing? yeah, you sounded like it’s aint latinos who are dominating right now, isn’t it? hahaha!
FOR YOUR INFORMATION … WE INVENTED KARATE, KUNG FU, JU JITSU, SOMO, ETC. WE ARE A MARTIAL ART CONTINENT WHILE YOU INVENTED SALSA, RUMBA, CHA CHA. TO COMPARE MANNY PACQUIAO WITH THE LEGENDARY BRUCE LEE IS A GREAT HONOR BESTOWED ON A FILIPINO CITIZEN. MY BROTHER IN LOW HOLDS SEVEN JET KUNE DO BELTS IN THE AMERICAN CONTINENT HE SERIOUSLY BELIEVE BRUCE LEE WOULD KILL MUHAMMAD ALI IF EVER THEY MET TOE TO TOE AND OF COURSE IF YOU HAVE SOME BACKGROUND IN MARTIAL ART YOULL KNOW WHAT HE MEANS. SO WITH COTTO AND PACQUIAO , IT WILL BE A TKO IN THE 9TH ROUND, MIGUEL WOULD BE CUT AND BRUISED SO BADLY BECAUSE MANNY IS JUST TOO FAST FOR HIM. CIAO!
all fans: excuse me but i think i need to clarify this: that bruce lee and manny comparison is just imaginary. i mean, look, inside the ring nobody directs the actions, no make-ups and no second-takes. yeah, bruce lee was a great martial artist. but pacman absorbs and throws blows unlike in the movies. be real though.
the blur you dont know this bruce lee’s first exposure in the USA was to demonstrate how kung fu is superior to any kind of martial art including boxing and challenge everyone in the ring. A loyal chinese master who didnt want americans to learn the secrets of kung fu wanted to silenced bruce lee. Bruce lee said he would end the fight in ten minutes. It ended in eight minutes. Just like how freddie roach predicted pacquiao would end the fight with hatton in three rounds. That was bruce lee’s first martial art exposure in the USA.
Here is another comparison:
Bruce Lee was born in the year of the dragon . Pacquiao on the other hand was born in the year of the horse. The Bible mentions the horse as one of the bravest of all animals, without fear of death (book of Job). Manny has “No Fear” in his fights.
Manny comes from the Philippines. Philippines comes from the name Philip, which means “horse lover” and Filipinos love Manny.
According to the Chinese, the horse is a hard working beast and Manny impersonates that in his training. He trains like a beast.
There is really no comparison. Yes Bruce Lee is a martial artist but he was famous in movies kicking *** but that’s all fake ****. While Manny became famous in boxing kicking *** on tougher opponents. There’s really no comparison. Manny is above Bruce in real life skills. What if Bruce was in MMA?
if there was any guy who can take punches, cotto would be top three. pacquiao can take punches too but from lightweights, not welterweights. pacquiao’s defense is a very active offense. manny doesn’t get hit that often. altho i pick manny to win, i am extremely wary of cotto’s patience perseverance and composure under fire. patience will always frustrate speed. i predict a very exciting fight that even the loser of the match will appreciate. so exciting mayweather-marquez will be erased from memory.
manny paquiao and bruce lee were both legendary superstar in asia with amazing speed and power, and consider them a greatest hero in asia for thier magnificient achievement in life, perhaps God reward both of them for thier greatest helping hand to all mankind.
true, Cotto could knockout Bruce Lee but I seriously doubt if ever he could hit him. Not a chance! The same thing with Pacquiao, as the commentators say, you don’t see his left coming (because of his speed). How can Cotto not feel Manny’s power when it will incessantly crush his face. Cotto is a great fighter, Manny is legendary same asBruce Lee.
Who did Bruce Lee really beat? Bruce Lee took a beating from Filipino martial artist Trobodour Ramos in the 70′s. Video’s available but confiscated by Warner Brothers.
For all those posters who said that there is NO comparison between Bruce Lee and Manny Pacquiao.
NOTE: Bruce Lee is a real life Kung-Fu/Martial Artist Champion, NOT only in movies.
While Manny Pacquiao is also a real-life Boxing Champion.
Bruce Lee woudn’t be popular and would not be in movies if not for his superb built-in Martial skills, while Manny is very popular of his boxing skills.
So there is a comparison for both of them in real life.
MANNY IS GREAT …. BUT THE LEGEND BRUCE LEE IS GREATER…
Some people just don’t understand that if you don’t research both sides of a comparison that your likely to be proven wrong in some aspect.
The truth is that Bruce Lee isn’t just an actor. Bruce Lee was considered a legend even while he was living, so obviously people were judgemental and challenged him. He accepted every single fight at the start of his legacy and during that time no one had ever beaten him. Keep in mind that these are “street fights”, not set-up tournaments with rules and restrictions. Bruce Lee became famous because of his fighting skills; his fighting skills did not become famous because of him.
The two fighters are hard to compare. I study jkd. Many of the most successful techniques are prohibited in boxing and mma. These include eye jabs, kicks to the groin and attacks toward weak points. Although the two fighters are both in excellent shape, quick and adaptive, they train for different reasons. Bruce stressed self defense while Manny is required to conform to rules of fair play
Sourpuss1: Stop lying or believe in the myths. Bruce Lee did not get beat by a Filipino martial artist. That rumor is as bad as the death touch rumor that was supposed to killed Bruce.
In my opinion, Bruce was stronger and faster. In the ring the fastest fighter that I’ve seen to date is Sugar Ray Leonard whom displayed blinding speed a long with power.
I can’t believe so many people have no idea what “martial arts” means or what Bruce Lee was all about! For your information, martial arts are meant to be useful in real combat, and Lee was a real martial artist AND a movie star! He OBVIOUSLY didn’t beat people for real in movies, but anyone who knows something about him knows he was perfectly able to do it in real life. Surely he was not the invincible god some think he was, but he was truly a great fighter and it’s ridiculous to say he was “fake” because he made movies.
I mean, imagine I came here and said boxing is “fake” because the fighters don’t punch each other with their bare knuckles. Well, that’s how clueless some of you guys are about martial arts.
Pacquiao and Lee are different because Western boxing and Eastern martial arts are very different disciplines, but they’re similar in that both of them can kick serious a** in a real fight.
Shooting film or video can involve special effects and trickery in constructing scenes no doubt, but you can clearly see the dynamic ability and physical talent Bruce Lee had and know without a doubt that he was an extremely able and gifted fighter.
To think that he was fake is blatantly ridiculous to anyone who trains as a fighter. It’s obvious he trained and developed his skills to the extreme.
I would challenge anyone to find an actor to who could reproduce what he did on screen. I do not think it could be done without that person being a very good fighter and extremely physically fit for real.
mmm, i can see how the comparisons might be similar, both are quick, strong, focused….But i think lee is more quicker both are and were superior in their fields but i think lee’s determination to succeed and perseverence wins hands down..no doubt manny is on top and after 3defeats managed to better himself and then be the best pound for pound fighter ever.. Lee, thru shire discipline and with the amazing ability to dazzle as well as amaze is just plain simply the man.manny maybe like bruce lee but there is only one lee and to me no comparison
Wow is this thread stupid.

Any questions?
“I would challenge anyone to find an actor to who could reproduce what he did on screen.”
How about a ballerina?
Not sure what the video clips are supposed to prove but clearly Manny is more in boxing form and Bruce is more in an exercise routine.
Manny throws some impressive punches and both Bruce and Manny (Bruce you can see in many clips, not so much in the above clip) show a strong use of force from back leg and hips in their punches.
Also, though not typically resulting in being a good boxer in the ring, being a good ballerina requires skill also.
Why not give both Manny and Bruce credit for their obvious skills. You could easily say that Manny sucks bigtime in his pathetic kicking ability. Nowhere near as good as Bruce … but that would be a dis-service to Manny as he is a pro boxer. Bruce was reaching out through film as a martial artist. Both are/were very talented and I would expect each would highly regard the other as very talented and skilled people.
WOW, Both of them (Bruce Lee and Manny Pacquiao) is a Legendary fighter and a famous actor as well. I could hardly make a comment of who is better than the other.
Please do not Compare The Great BRUCE LEE with the village idiot Manny Pacquiao, it is an insult to the Legend of Bruce Lee and his Fans!
Bruce Lee should not be compared with Manny Pacquiao! Bruce Lee is an intelligent man! A great man. He is a Philosopher, a great Martial Artist! Manny Pacquiao is an IDIOT and a MORON! Yes, Manny Pacquiao is a champ right now, but it will end soon! He’s got his head up in his ***! He will not have any legacy because he lets those corrupt Filipino politicians control him like a puppet.
Bruce Lee would kick his *** back to Gen. Santos, Philippines if the Great Bruce Lee were alive. I’m Filipino, and I’m ashamed of Manny Pacquiao especially with what he’s doing! A brainless dude who wants to be in politics. He should just concentrate in boxing. He can’t even act and sing, now he’s recording and making crappy movies! Somebody should kick his ***!
bruce lee died on the 20th of july not on the 10th of may, this is for the people that dont know..
is manny like bruce lee, maybe size and height but not the fighting style. manny punch fast and he can move but on the defending side hes nothing like bruce lee.
freddie roach, after the first pacquiao – barrera fight, called manny the bruce lee of boxing.
sparrow
October 19, 2009 at 7:38 pmbruce lee has speed and power that can knock out the rock hard cotto. pacquiao has speed but does n’t have bruce’s power. cotto has the power to withstand pacquiao’s speed and power. all cotto has to do is wait for manny to come in. and cotto has the power to knock out bruce lee himself.
