Well done to Morne Steyn, who despite the incessant booing by the Newlands crowd, produced a brilliant kicking display to lead the Blue Bulls to a nail-biting 21-19 win over Western Province.
Let me say up front that I was supporting Province on the day, but quite honestly, the behaviour of their fans turned my stomach.
It’s nothing new, of course. I can remember as a school kid in the early 1980s being disgusted by their booing while opponents took penalty kicks. For heaven’s sake, WP have just been penalised for illegal play – why boo the opposition?
Sure, this Newlands bunch are not the only stadium crowd guilty of such behaviour, but somehow they do seem the worst – at least in South Africa.
In the first Currie Cup semifinal of the day, I think the Sharks fans were well behaved as a whole.
Frankly, the WP mob marred an otherwise brilliant contest – one of the best I’ve seen this year. To quote that old cliche – rugby was the winner and in this case, the WP fans were the deserved losers! (One has to assume that these idiotic hypocrites actually cheer Steyn when he plays for the Springboks.)

Yes, and apparently drop kicks only count as rugby when they make the Sprinkboks win. The crowd was jeering and booing at the failed drop kick attempts, and I’m just wondering why? If you have to, rather cheer that he missed.
Well, in reality, with the last kick of Morne Steyn, we were still booing the Fijian, who, after a season of doing nothing, had just given the Currie Cup away.
Unsporting crowds are commonplace all over SA these days. Other countries regard this as a national characteristic of SAns. It wasn’t always like this, but it sure is now.
The inescapable fact is that Frikkie Welsch was having a stroming game against his old Northern Transvaal team . I think in Alistair Coetzee’s wisdom Sareli Naquelevuki was brought on for the last 2 or 3 minutes . That poor decision by Coetzee to bring on Sareli , and Sareli’s stupid high tackle , cost the WP union millions .
WP knew it was going to have a home final if they beat NTvl – a tall order , nevertheless one which Luke Watson’s men were up for , and nogal ahead until Coetzee and Sareli’s rush of blood .
Just how expensive a decision that turns out to be , will be confirmed if Sareli’s and Coetzee’s contracts are renewed .
Your prejudiced criticism of the Newlands crowd should be read in the context of your comment that “rugby was the winner”. You are obviously one of those ‘rugby-enthusiasts’ that loves to back the winner — no matter what quality of rugby is dished up. No, rugby cannot be the winner when 1 guy succeeds with 7 kicks at posts, thereby beating the team that scored a try and that played the more enterprising rugby. I despise that kick’n charge style of rugby, where the attacking team, (Bulls and Boks), kick up-and-unders even when already in the opposition’s half of the field. It will kill the sport as spectacle. I certainly have never cheered Morne Steyn, or any other ‘kicking-flyhalf’, in Bok colours. Bring on the rule-changes, to also save rugby and force the transformation of our local game so that the gifted ‘ballplayers’ are again allowed the opportunity of getting their hands on the ball. Penalties to count 1 point each, with the more liberal use of the yellow- card in the ‘red-zones’, until teams adapt to that by infringing more infrequently, which will then also reduce the amount of stoppage-time in a game. (I hope the Cheetahs thrash the ********).
SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!!!
I was part of that crowd and I resent being called awful. You have to be a Capetonian to understand why Newlands boos. The booing is not doen with malice, neither is it meant to insult the the opposing team or player, it is done to intimidate/distract/confuse the player taking a kick (which is the ONLY time Newlands faithful boos (or when a ref makes blatant unfair decisions) Atmiitedly a guy like Morne deserves all the credit for keeping his cool amongst 50 000 boos (well less you of course). YES we admire him when his a Springbok we even supported Naas back in the day, but when it comes to My Province, the opposition is my enemy. We have never and will never stoop to the Bulls’ mentality and offensive behaviour by booing the players EVEN WHEN THEY WEAR THE SPRINGBOK JERSEY(Percy, Luke etc). THAT MY FRIENDS IS AWFUL AND YOU CANNOT CLAIM TO HAVE A RUGBY BRAIN WHEN YOU HATE THE PLAYER NOT THE GAME. We will admire the Bulls and give them all credit when it is due and we will support them as unconditionally when the don the Green and Gold!
Idiots? WP? I think not. Look within.
WP ON THE BLUE BULLS.
@ proooooovince!! and abie
You guys are true province sore losers… cry babies. Boohoohoo, we couldn’t win the Bulls… again. We still suck, boohoohoo.
In abie’s words: “The booing is not doen with malice, neither is it meant to insult the the opposing team or player, it is done to intimidate/distract/confuse the player taking a kick”… WTF??? You have to be a very special type of ****** to allow yourself to say something as stupid as that.
Face it boys, the Bulls have once again turned you Weepees into our *******. You got a problem with that? Then play better rugby, play winning rugby. Stop complaining about the kicking game… its fair and legal play, you are just moaning because you don’t have a super boot like Morne Steyn. You are sounding like the British and Irish Lions after Morne did the same to them. IT’S LEGAL RUGBY… use it or loose it! And I promise you proooooovince!!, the kicking is not going to kill the game of rugby soon… millions of people here in the north love every moment that Morne shatters the enemies dreams with his leathal boot!
I will admit, Province played a very impressive game, and yes the Bulls were lucky to get that last minute penalty… however, a win is a win… especially in a semi final, no matter how the game was won.
And to the author, booing is something that happens at every stadium in the world… not just at Newlands. It is part of the game (unfortunately), but you try and stop 50,000 pissed off supporters from booing… good luck mate!
I think there needs to be a campaign to stop this highly unsporting crowd behavior. I remember in the 70′s & 80′s we used to clap the opposition when they scored at Kingspark (ABSA). Now sharks supporters are almost as bad as the WP fans. Very pathetic and an embarrassment to everyone overseas watching on TV. I feel sorry for WP players – they played very well – but as in all games – you win some – you lose some.
Sorry, but the Loftus faithfull are no better!! (I remember the game that Luke Watson pumped his fist to the loftus crowd, what a legend!!!) And yes, the Sharks game wasn’t as bad when it comes to the booing, but there were almost no poeple in the stadium in the Shark tank! WP still has the best and most loyal supporters, throughout the year, even in the Super 14. Rather talk about Victor’s poor professionalism, when he didn’t want to shake Luke’s hand before the game at the coin toss!!! Rather talk about Bakkie’s poor manner of trying to soften up the province players!! And so I can go on! From my side, the Bulls won it, but the team that wanted it more was WP, and they should have had it. Everyone said that the bulls will thump them and put them to shame, (on paper it was justified), but that did not happen, did it? So see it for what it was, a great game, that went the wrong way.
Cheers.

October 18, 2009 at 6:26 amAgreed the WP supporters where really just annoying. I can guarantee that when the Boks where playing in the Tri-Nations the some WP fans where behind Morne 100%. Well Done Bulls
