The launch of a new report by the World Health Organisation today confirms that HIV, pregnancy-related conditions and TB are the major killers of women aged 15 to 45 across the world.

Heart attacks and stroke are the two major causes of death after 45 years old, according to the the report ‘Women and Health: Today’s Evidence. Tomorrow’s Agenda’.

The report also finds that “90% of care for HIV/AIDS-related illness is provided in the home – almost always by women”.

“Yet more often than not, they go unsupported, unrecognized and unremunerated in this essential role,” the WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan states.

She called for “urgent action both within the health sector and beyond to improve the health and lives of girls and women around the world, from birth to older age”.
