I USED to think that Eskom was being run by Martians determined to switch off earth’s electricity supply so they could quietly invade under the cover of involuntary darkness.
Now I have proof.
This just in: CEO Jacob Maroga, who had resigned according to an announcement by Bobby Godsell, has not resigned. He is back at his desk and Godsell has resigned.
These Martians run a pretty tight circus.
Ringmistress Barbara Hogan, currently presiding over the failure of the SABC, the absence of a CEO at Transnet, a long-term acting CEO at SAA and the most shocking stuff up at Eskom, must have barbs at the end of her whip.
Keeping a straight face, public enterprises spokesman Ayanda Shezi said of Godsell’s demise: “Yes, he (Godsell) has resigned.”
Well, good. Godsell was once a defender of the free market, but of late he has been a proponent of taxing us to fund a state monopoly. So don’t expect me to drop to the floor bawling …
This from the Sapa story:
“He’s (Maroga’s) resumed his duties as chief executive,” said spokesman Andrew Etzinger.
Etzinger said it was never completely clear whether he had resigned or not and there was an issue of “interpretation of a discussion”.
“Mr Maroga’s interpretation was that he hadn’t resigned, the board’s was that he had.
“Mr Maroga had offered to resign and the board had accepted that offer… it in was a context of a discussion and not a formal resignation.”
This was in line with the ANC Youth League and Black Management Forum’s scepticism over the resignation.
“As far the board is concerned he is the CEO again. I’m sure the process is not completed, but what we can confirm today is that Mr Maroga is back in the office,” said Etzinger.
Calls and e-mails for Maroga or Godsell to add comment were not returned.
The company is yet to issue a formal media statement on the matter.
It has been reported that at one point both Godsell and Maroga resigned from the helm of the power utility, which is weathering severe criticism over its handling of the country’s electricity supply needs.

Shoddy reporting, Mr Hartley. If you did your research you would find out that the Department of Public Enterprises is not in charge of the SABC. That is the Communications department’s responsibility.
