JOOST van der Westhuizen has told The Times that he accepts the decision by Supersport to relieve him of his duties as a presenter.
He says it is part of the punishment he deserves for his involvement with drugs and his infidelity.
He deserves some credit for this, especially as his future is now uncertain although, it must immediately be said, the royalties from his new book could more than make up for this in the short term.
Van der Westhuizen has admitted in the book, Joost, The Man in the Mirror: “Against all my principles, I had a sexual liaison – we never had intercourse – with a woman who was not my wife. And we took drugs.”
He does not say who the mystery woman is, but his description of what took place bears an uncanny resemblance to those described by one Marlize van Emmenis, who released a video-tape apparently showing Joost in a compromised position.
What this whole sorry saga illustrates is just how important it is for those in the limelight to make a clean breast of things before they become messy.
The candour and regret displayed by Joost in this book would have served him well when this story first surfaced.
It would have allowed him and his family the time and space to attempt to repair their broken trust and it would have won him public sympathy.
Instead Van der Westhuizen chose denial and with each counter-revelation by his accuser the stakes were raised.
The toll this took on him is all too clear. As he describes in an extract from the book published in The Times today, van der Westhuizen was hospitalised after a stress-related black-out.
We must now wish him well in his effort to heal his family and rebuild the public’s trust.

I think that Joost has now given the public an account of what he did, now it is time to leave him and his family alone to attempt to heal and move on with their lives. Yes, he is a public figure and yes, he should not have done what he did. However none of us are perfect and we all have skeletons in our closets. The only persons forgiveness he needs is Amors – not the SA public.

I do believe that SA needs to dwell on positive stories in these difficult economic times and not on the misery and heartache of others.

Joost will received no sympathy from me, he deserves to be bannished because he lied to everyone. I do not believe Amor to be so innocent either, she knew, woman always know, she just prefer not to deal with it.

I just feel that it was a very selfish thing that Joost has done by denying the truth from his family especially from his wife. The scars will mostly certainly take a very long time for all concerned to heal. This is a lesson for all people that are in relationships, that we should always tell the truth no matter how bad the sitation is. I hope that you will be able to forgive each other and carry on with your lives. You have two beautiful children to think about as well.God bless you.

Joost has been given far too much credit. If a good investigative journalist was too look into his life style, off the field/studio, you would find the truth about this man and his addiction to ***!

Shame Eli, How can you say roast?? His “ROAST” will only probably really come when he meets his Maker. Unless of course he meets him on his knees first. They say Joost has learnt the hard way, but I say no he has experienced the hard way but probably not learnt yet as I heard an interview regarding his book and I am positive that there were some lies still being told during that interview. Soooo?
Eli did you read my story under the blog about Manuel’s car??

The worms will chow him in his grave just like all others from the Pope to Michael Jackson.
