Sometime yesterday at a hotel near the airport, the Police Commissioner, Bheki Cele, addressed religious leaders who were attending the “National Church Leaders Consultation”.
His message? According to an official statement he “implanted” the importance of “shepherding a pilgrimage towards the attainment of a safer and better South Africa”.
His message was that religious leaders must oppose crime. Right. They must have been unsure whether or not they were for or against it until he clarified the matter for them.
Another quote: “An attack on police is an attack on the rule of law and democracy”.
And from the statement: “Sermons can be used as effective vehicles to emphasize consequences of police killings; empower communities with knowledge and information on how to deal with and prevent domestic violence; encourage members of denominations to speak out by reporting illegal possession of firearms and misuse thereof.”
Sounds like he was reminding the good men and women of the church of the importance of the ten commandments.
