THE suspension of the Standerton town council following violent protests is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it is laudable that action is being taken where there appears to be evidence of graft.
But the fact remains that a very dangerous signal has been sent: If you don’t like your local government, start burning things down and the ANC will boot them out.
This opens the door for those who lose the battle for nomination to these positions in the party structures to attempt to get into office by instigating protest.
Political and financial motives for militancy are being multiplied.
Government leaders would do well to reconsider their approach. While it is good that they act, they must also be seen to be acting against those who break the law with violent actions. Where are the arrests over the burning of municipal property? Where is the investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators of the destruction of very precious and limited local government resources.
The populist truimphalism of the likes of Julius Malema and Fikile Mbalula before the celebrating mob sends the wrong signal.

This article is astonishingly ignorant and non factual, infact even bothering of thumb sucking. Waste of our time as readers.
Why did it take so long to suspend these under performers? Who was supposed to keep them accountable for their posts? The ANC should fire the top brass that don’t do their jobs properly keeping tabs on the performance of the Municipalities. Why does the ANC wait for violence before they govern properly? SHOCKING!!!
I applaud the downtrodden masses for taking protest action. Maybe Julius Malema can read, IF that is true he probably read Noam Chomsky.
Noam Chomsky wrote that when your democratic vote is ignored and your elected leaders refuse to hear your concerns, your ONLY option is to take back your democratic power by protest.
The mob must escalate the protest until they are heard and the elected leaders start delivering on their election promises. The mob is not to blame, it is their ONLY option.
In the now famous words of our glorious liberators, the ANC, ‘Make the country ungovernable’
Sadly and with regret I have to say “Viva Comrade Julius, Viva!”
