JOEL Netshitenzhe, surely the most decent man in South African politics, has resigned from his position as head of the Presidency’s policy unit.
An intriguing line from the statement said he had quit “following discussion and by mutual agreement with the Minister for the National Planning Commission, Trevor Manuel”.
What could that mean? Netshitenzhe used to report directly to President Thabo Mbeki. But these days there are several fairly chunky egos floating around the Presidency and there may not be room for someone not willing to haul out the long knife.
Apparently Netshitenzhe’s line of reporting had been reduced to the DG’s office, a serious signal that he was not wanted around anymore.
More from the statement: “Mr Netshitenzhe has served in the national government since 1994. He was the first Chief Executive Officer of the Government Communications and Information System (GCIS). He was instrumental in establishing the PCAS in the Presidency, which he has headed since its formation. His contribution to the development of policy and in improving coordination of implementation across government has been invaluable and is highly appreciated.”
Well, that’s a big brain walking out the door … I hope those who remain behind know what they’re doing.
