BULELANI NGCUKA REJECTS SELEBI’S ALLEGATIONS WITH CONTEMPT
This morning the former national police commissioner, Mr Jackie Selebi, an accused in the
South Gauteng High Court made startling allegations of corruption against me during his plea explanation.
Although I, as former national director of prosecutions and an officer of the court, would ordinarily ignore many of these assertions which are seek to create a sideshow. In this instance, however, I have reluctantly decided to respond to the allegations as they emanate from a very senior former law enforcement officer.
I reject all these allegations with contempt. I never attempted to extort or receive bribes from Rautenbach’s team or anyone else for that matter. Not then and not now. It is an outright lie.
Firstly, I have never met with Mr Billy Rautenbach. During my tenure as the NDPP, my team and I, met with his lawyer, Mr Ramsey, following his request to make representations for a plea agreement. Unfortunately, the discussion reached a dead end and could not reach any agreement as we, the NPA, would not settle for any penalty that excluded custodial sentence.
Secondly, when I joined business, my partners and I, took a principled decision not to be involved in any mining activity. We adopted this policy decision to avoid any perceived conflict of interests because my wife, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, was the Minister of Minerals and Energy at the time . That policy was re-visited once she moved and became the Deputy President.
Thirdly, it is baffling why Mr Selebi, the most senior policeman at the time, did not charge me following his alleged discovery.
If Mr Selebi, or anyone else, has evidence of my criminal involvement, they my present it in court.
Furthermore, one would hope that the court proceeding would also prove that I was never involved in the initiation and investigation of Mr Selebi.
