FOLLOWING Nedbanks withdrawal of its sponsorship of Athletics South Africa over the handling of the Caster Semenya affair, Julius Malema has called for revoluationary action (details presumably to follow) against the bank.
Malema, who earlier pledged loyalty to Chuene despite his admission that he lied to the public (and to the youth league) about gender testing was in full cry. These quotes from Sapa:
“Let them withdraw. We’ll engage them and we’ll expose them for who they are. We’ll tell them the truth of why they are withdrawing, and we’ll mobilise the South African society to know what Nedbank is,” Malema told reporters in Johannesburg.
“That’s what defines our struggle today – of people who are refusing to accept the transformation, to accept African leadership, to accept new development.
“Why are people – instead of celebrating and putting more money and more sponsorship – are now withdrawing? Are they sponsoring Leonard Chuene or are they sponsoring athletics in South Africa?”
Really. A pressing social issue indeed.

Why stop with Nedbank and Absa? They are all rotten to the core and ripping off every South African consumer.

Unfortunately, the ANC government has been *****-footing around with these big banks in exchange for sponsorships of cadres’ favourite projects.

I propose that all banks should be banned from sponsoring professional sport and these sport codes should be made to survive on broadcasting income and gate takings instead.

@Omni: You shame me and my people but you are correct. We are the very same people who murdered our these unfortunate people in the xenophobic killings. We are the same people who boast about our democratic order, the most progressive constitution on planet Earth and fine politicians.

The banks should be allowed to make a handsome profit but not at the rates they have been fleecing us for decades. When will the ANC government rein them in?

What is the difference between Chuene, Malema and the rest of the leadwership across SACP, Cosatu and the ANC? It certainly cannot be ethical behaviour.

I agree Eli. Banks take our money because they can, not because of our ethnicity. Governments must have dialogue with these companies to ease suffering. Im sure Africa will heal oneday, mebe then all will be well.

Well he may mobilise as he did during the April elections, and I believe that he still has more followers as the number of literate people in this country has not changed since April.

That explains why Standard Bank gave a 5 million pre-election ‘bribe’ / ‘contribution’ to the ANC election coffers.

One comment above jumped out at me. Someone called Nedbank the most racist bank. Sorry they declined the loan, boet, but the criteria are the same for you and me.

One thing Nedbank did not do is jump into the microlending industry like the other three big banks did. Nothing has created more misery and poverty than this wholesale fleecing of the masses perpetrated by ABSA, SB and FNB.

Nedbank was the only big bank which did not ‘give’ the ANC their requested ‘bribe’. Perhaps it is now payback time for giving the money to the World Wildlife Fund instead.

@ G. Annadale,

That is why BEE is very impotant, we want to change that situation whereby a certain group is “pennyless” you are quite correct there.

I am so proud of the current ANC leadership for explicitly pointing out that they want to consolidate BEE, unlike their double tongued (COPE ) counterparts.

Yes Nkosislapchips, BEE is very “impotent”, just like Malema and his roadside beggar rabble.

My take on this is that Nedbank’s profile and standing in the public and business community has risen considerably with this silly diatribe from Mamela. After all, for the vast majority in the community who do banking, anything from Malema’s lips must be treated with the contempt it deserves.

So the opposite will be the result. Nedbank is laughing all the way to the, erm, ‘bank.’

My fiancé has been working for Nedbank for some time now. I don’t think the Nedbank management leaves up to the values they seem to be promoting to our community.

My fiancée was recently told that there is going to be an enquiry about her, although the Bank did not suffer any losses, the worst part she knew before her line manager told her.

Really we need to be objective and honest, if she was white the procedure or what ever it is was going to be handled more confidential and professional but because she is black everyone must know ‘ how incompetent’ blacks are.

Is Nedbank treating people equally? or the lighter you are the better working conditions for you???

Government needs to regularize the Banking professional. Although we are in the 15th year of democracy black people are still treated inferior in the private sector.

Nedbank is really a racist place to work for.
