THE Judicial Services Commission has scratched Cape Judge President John Hlophe from its shortlist for four vacancies on the Constitutional Court. But the grounds on which it has done so remain opaque.
If it was because of his discussion with two of that court’s judges about how Jacob Zuma was being victimised in a matter before them, the JSC has contradicted itself.
On the one hand, it has said that Hlophe’s behaviour was insufficiently serious to warrant a hearing. On the other it is saying it was sufficiently grave to disqualify him from a seat on the highest bench in the land.
Surely the JSC should provide reasons for its decision to settle this burning question?
The judges who were shortlisted were Johan Froneman, Raymond Zondo, Mogoeng wa Mogoeng, Mandisa Maya, Sisi Khampepe, Leona Theron and Chris Jafta.
Judge Hlophe has no one else to blame but himself. This is a backlash of all the controversy that has plagued his career as judge….which he seems to have enjoyed! The concourt needs a fresh start not a “recycled team” as we’ve seen in other areas of our government
Sanity has prevailed … at least for now!
Let’s hope that Slippery Hlophe does not re-emerge as the front runner to take over from Pius Langa’s successor. When individuals behave in this unethical manner by telling lies, making racist statements, taking bribes, unduly trying to manipulate and coerce others with total immunity then we are firmly on the road to the Zimbabwean end-game.
I don’t agree with much that Helen Zille has to say but I must agree that continually targeting whites for scorn and harassment only because of the colour of their skins is a dangerous game played by people in the ANC regime and their cronies.
At least we’ll be spared hlophe’s idiot lawyer(we did they pluck him from?)Barnabas Xulu and his fellow comedian in Forum for Hlophe alliance(something like that)
After watching him on Interface weeks ago,im sure not to appoint him next time i might need a lawyer
I am happy about the name…My top four are Justices Mandisa Maya, Leona Theron, Sisi Khampepe and Chris Jaftha. Zondo can come in if its definite that Theron is going to succeed Tshabalala in KZN. As for Judge Froneman, I do no think he is what the Concourt needs at the momemt, he gave a talk during the recent constitutional week at Rhodes University were he either ridiculed those who are of the opinon that transformation in the judiciary is too slow or simply underplayed the issue. I quote ” white judges once asked – should we shoot ourselves?. I was disappointed.
