ATHOL Trollip, the DA’s Parliamentary leader, has come as close as you can within the bounds of decorum to tearing a strip off Party leader, Helen Zille.
Zille caused a stir last week when she said Zuma had endangered his wives with his promiscious sexual behaviour. It was the latest in a string of “attack-dog” statements by Zille, who went negative in the final weeks of the election with a surprising “Stop Zuma” message.
Trollip took a totally different position. He told the Cape Town press club: “I believe he does deserve a level of respect by virtue of his position as President. I also believe that presidential deference in Africa has been one of our main problems. I believe his position warrants respect… I come to this parliament with no baggage and I’m going to give Mr Zuma the same privilege.”
He went on to describe Zuma as fallible, but a “warm blooded South African”.
How did Zille come to occupy this uncomfortable position on stage right?
The word is that the advisers who turned Tony Leon into an abrasive ultra-critic were back after licking their wounds in thw wake of Leon’s departure from the leadership.
Zille beat Trollip in the battle to take over from Leon, ostensibly on a ticket offering a more considered, kinder, gentler, DA. But the architect of the aggressive Leon platform, Ryan Coetzee was biding his time and when the election went into full swing, he had the ear of Zille, who was increasingly nervous about winning the Western Cape vote.
He stood unsuccessfully against Trollip for the position of Parliamentary leader.
Trollip and Zille are now on a collision course. The veteran Eastern Cape politician poses a real headache for Zille as he appears to have the backing of most of her MPs and her youth wing.
The ANC will have the last laugh here as the DA for the first time exhibits serious tension.
One thing that the DA (PFP/DP NP) can be congratulated on is winning over the majority of the people who would have voted for NP from 1948 to 1994. In other words from an Afrikaner nationalist majority that supported apartheid to a liberal minority that used to advocate federalism. Furthermore they regained the voters that voted for NP to rule the Western Cape in 1994 and hence their victory there. However it seems that DA, Zille, Leon, ANC affiliates and so on are stuck in the apartheid roles/tactics of their predecessors. ANC affiliates shout racism/sexism to everything, threaten boycotts/strikes and threaten to tear down everything. Zille like she did as a Rand Daily Mail political journo exposing the evils of the ruling Afrikaner nationalists is out to “expose” the evils of the ruling African nationalists. Sad entrenchment of racial or attack politics.
Trollip shows a level of political maturity and I do believe he is the only one within the DA who brings along a level headed leadership in parliament. I salute him.
I AGREE THAT SHE BECAME PERSONAL, AND IT DO COME ACROSS THAT SHE DONT HAVE RESPECT FOR THE PRES.BUT I AM SURE WHAT IT SEEMS LIKE AND REALITY ARE FAR APART. HAVE YOU APPROACHED HER ABOUT YOUR CONCERNS?AS AN AFTER THOUGHT PRES. ZUMA THROUGH HIS COURTCASE,BROUGHT ALL HIS DIRTY LINNEN TO THE FORE.
@ All the enthusiastic DA supporters: One day you will thank Athol Trollip for his brave words. Just as you applauded Barbara Hogan for being an independent person who had made up her own mind, you might want to afford Trollip the same courtesy.
What Helen Zille had said in her press statement about Jacob Zuma was 100% correct. But was it savvy to say this so soon after the inauguration? I think the jury might be hung at the moment but in the fullness of time, it might turn out that it was not the cleverest thing to do.
Helen Zille needs to realise that her behaviour is constantly being scrutinized by the very people she is trying to convert in 2011 and later in 2014 when we have our next set of general elections. Getting into cr.ap-fests with the ANCYL’s bullies is just plain dumb and will prevent the DA from service delivery.
So be embarrassed, take the hit graciously and move on.
I thought your headline this morning, ‘Top DA man’s attack on Zille’ was misleading, Ray. Where exactly is his attack?’
Trollip shows maturity i think Zille must learn a thing or two from him. Mrs Zille must accept the fact that South African chose Zuma to be the king of the jungle, and there is no way she can change that. the sooner you accept it ,the better.
Exactly my question too Juno, where is his attack. He was merely expressing “his” opionion and i believe that your: “your opinions are actually confessions of your character”. Trollip is a “mature” politician- meaning he knows how to react. He is the man to lead the DA and take it to another dimension. Just a pity Helen got caught up in a “Malema moment” what she said is true but was it neccessary? I dont think there is a fight between the two – just different matters of opinion.
@Juno – He directly contradicted her on a major public controversy. In politics that is an attack.
Please guys get your ducks in a row. Your assumptions are misleading. Trollip is to mature in politics to openly attack Zille. I think is opinion was honest and i respect him for that. Further i think he made that statement because it was an indirect attack on the ANC MP who boldly and proudly said that Zille might be the Premier of the Western Cape but she is not HER premier and she will never acknowlegde her as such. Come guys have some insight to your reporting.
No Ray, you are wrong. Trollip just suggested a slightly different position in a totally different context. In politics, this is only an attack when it emanates from an opposing party. Where are the words that “directly contradicted her” or “tore a strip”? Only in your immagination, I think.
The context of Zille’s attack on the ANC and Zuma must be seen within the context of The ANC attack dogs trying to ‘tear a strip’ out of Zille and the DA. Zille has just proven that her bite is worse than her bark, which cannot be said of the rabid ANC bunch.
We simply dont agree with you on this one Ray. You have ‘hacked’ this one to create sensation out of nothing.

Furthermore, you have ‘hacked’ this issue, which is hardly a spat, to create sensation out of nothing. I appears that the media is drunk on sensationalism and needs to keep manufacturing it out of nothing. Alternatively there is a concerted effort to discredit Zille and to create non-existant ructions within the DA and support base. We are not that dumb.
The DA is strong and fully behind Zille and Trollip.

The DA is fully behind both Zille and Trollip. The DA is strong.
Ray, to use the phrase ‘attack’ for a disagreement is pure sensationalising and to be expected of tabloidism.
Nevertheless, Trollip is right. Zille has gone overboard and portrayed a lack of judgement. She must be tired from the election camapaign and either she is not getting good advice or she refuses to take advice
By his magnanimous gesture Trollip wishes to expunge the facts concerning JZ. I’d like to remind him that JZ arrived in the presidency with a lot of untidy baggage. I do hope that any differences that there might be between Trollip and Zille, it’s kept clean and free of “spin” by the press who I think are in danger of selling stories by whatever means… this time the press have overplayed the tendancy towards sensational headlines at the expense of the facts… we’ll see soon enough

May 19, 2009 at 3:58 amTrolllip: you’ve got it wrong buddy: WE ELECT leaders – they are beholden to US: they must earn our respect by their actions, and how they hold up to their promises. Helen has been doing a good job. I don’t want my chosen leader to kow-tow to be PC. I want her to tell things as they are. If she didn’t perform I would be the first to complain – we , the electorate don’t have to ‘show respect’ to our leaders ( put in their lucrative positions by US). They should show respect to US.
How about the ‘Minister’ of Transport’s R1 Mill car, hey? Lemme tell you, if Zille had accepted something like that – I would be disgusted. I wouldn’t think she would though.
BTW Trollip: you’ve just lost my confidence. FO.
