Markinor research has made an interesting finding: “More South Africans have confidence in the mass media institutions than any other democratic institution measured.”
Said Markinor: “Amongst all eligible voters, the ANC and the mass media are given the highest confidence ratings while
local government is given the lowest rating. Confidence in the mass media is fairly high across the board
and it would seem that South Africans rely on the media as an information source. ANC supporters
seem to be quite positive about state institutions and have the most confidence in firstly their own party
and secondly parliament. Black South Africans follow a similar pattern to ANC supporters and are fairly
positive about state institutions, except for local government – 48% say they have confidence in local
government.”
The ANC was the only party measured and it came in just two points ahead of the media in the research based on a sample of 3300:
