PARENTS in the greater Johannesburg area are worried about their children contracting, perhaps even dying from, meningitis.
This follows several high-profile cases which have been widely reported.
What is missing is a proper comprehensive response from the authorities. The first thing that needs to be done is simple communication.
The authorities must tell us the extent of the problem, how the disease is contracted and whether or not it is advisable to vaccinate children against the disease.
Instead, all we are getting is an attempt to play down or deny the meningitis deaths. Will the health department please wake up.

March 10, 2009 at 10:49 amI wonder how many young people are dying of this disease and because it has been misdiagnosed, it remains under the radar screen. We have had 15 years of denialism since the ANC regime came into power.
What are the chances that they will admit to a problem with our medical response capability for the poorest of the poor and ACTUALLY DO something about it? I guess not much since no individual ANC politician would be able to skim some cream off a sweet deal with medicine and vaccine suppliers.
