GILL Scott Heron coined the word “Hollyweird”. Somehow appropriate for the latest breaking news: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have called up Zimbabwe’s Morgan Tsvangirai to offer condolences over the death of his wife. Then their publicist called the media.
Nobody minds Hollywood stars who have made obscene amounts of money taking their clothes off throwing a little bit Africa’s way, but this sort of morbid, gravitas-seeking sensationalism is really in poor taste.
From the Sapa story:
Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have called
Zimbabwe’s Premier Morgan Tsvangirai to offer condolences over his
wife’s death in a car crash, an aide told reporters Monday.
“He didn’t manage to speak to them because the line was
disconnected,” the premier’s aide told reporters at Tsvangirai’s home,
speaking on condition of anonymity.
The couple are active in charity work around the world, but have no
apparent links to Zimbabwe in particular. Jolie gave birth to one of
their children in nearby Namibia and they have adopted a little girl
from Ethiopia, among their six children.
