IT’S official: South Africans are the world dagga smoking champions.
A report from a UN agency shows that around eight percent of South Africans use the recreational drug, twice the global average of four percent.
The temptation to laugh this off as a big joke should be avoided. While light recreational use of marijuana is probably not that harmful, the report suggests that South Africans are using it in a far more destructive way.
The habitual abuse of marijuana has consequences for the lungs as well as for mental health, not to mention productivity.
It can cause users to lose their jobs and it can severely impact on family life.
More alarming is the suggestion that abuse is rife among South African boys under the age of sixteen.
Such large scale abuse is destructive, placing a massive burden on health care and weakening social institutions that are the cornerstone of our society.
And marijuana is not the only problem.
Almost 240 000 South Africans are on the drug cocaine, a dangerous and highly addictive narcotic.
And a further 270 000 use the drug Tik, an amphetamine with very damaging effects on physical and mental health.
Add to that the fact that around 1,8 million South Africans are addicted to alcohol and you have a picture of a society that is in the throes of a massive social crisis.
We have been targeted by the drug lords, and the authorities have been aware of this.
But we have failed to defend ourselves against the scourge of drugs.
Our police force has been without a commissioner for over a year. The Scorpions, a unit which tenaciously fought organised crime in the face of political indifference, has been closed down. We are experiencing the consequences of these actions. The drug lords are in the driver’s seat.
as a patriot of this once great country of our i’m deeply hurt and disappointed at what is going on, but one has to wonder, how are we as a people suppose to be able to stay safe, and stay crime and drug free while those leading the country are at the fore front of the criminal activities and just get away with it, who are we suppose to look up to, how are we to be convinced that our goverment cares about us while it uses billions of rands to satisfy a few priviledged people’s egoes while we’ve got millions of satrving voting citizens, and those in power are willing to change the constitution only to keep 1 person from facing the justice system, i say South Africa we need to take a stand againsts this injustice against us and our children and against democracy
Difference is that **** (tobacco) and booze are taxed, so they get a cut. They hate it when they can’t get a cut, so it’s classed as bad…..
How many people died from alcohol related deaths last year? Or is that no longer reported as news?
Mulalo mufumadi , this story has got nothing to do with politics . Stop piliticizing everything and come with a constructive view on how we stop substance abuse . If your so worried about your children’s future , there is one thing you can do , assasinate JZ.
This is a direct outcome of the ANC regime ensuring that their cadres, friends and families occupy all the senior positions in our safety and security administration. What does it help that most of the senior people are black but hopelessly incompetent and corrupt?
It’s unfortunate that most of the views regarding smoking weed comes from armchair critics, people who don’t really know what they’re goin on about… The use (or abuse) of weed or any other substance legal/illegal comes down to the individual using it… weed only becomes a problem once the user stops using it as a recreational drug and starts using it as a means of escapism… i’m not for or against it just simply advocating for moderation…
I would like to clear up that marijuana is not a cause for any to loose their job. If you’re lazy and are have lost you job, you were going to do so anyway. It cannot be a direct from smoking habitually.Your productivity can only be determined by you. If you set out not to do anything, you are going to do exactly that.

in the 8000 odd years of mankind’s recorded history of smoking marijuana, there is not a single recorded case of death. Caffeine is more additive, causing more deaths.
“Deaths in the United States in a typical year are as follows:
* Tobacco kills about 400,000
* Alcohol kills about 80,000
* Workplace accidents kill 60,000
* Automobiles kill 40,000
* Cocaine kills about 2,500
* Heroin kills about 2,000
* Aspirin kills about 2,000
* Marijuana kills 0
There has never been a recorded death due to marijuana at any time in US history.
All illegal drugs combined kill under 20,000 per year, or a small percent of the number killed by alcohol and tobacco.
Tobacco kills more people each year than all of the people killed by all of the illegal drugs in the last one hundred years.”
Its about time people stop taking in the bias media that’s governed, and wake up.

Its funny how every one in South Africa claim to be completely free when we cant even smoke or posses marijuana in our own homes.If people smoke marijuana at home then what harm can they do?The goverment has a right to evade our home and decide what we do or keep in it?How is that being free?People should have a right to do as they please in the boundries of their own home regardless because who are you to tell me what to do in my own home?another thing,its been scientifically proven that it is impossible to over dose on marijuana,it does not kill people nor does it make people become violent in any form.So if its not as bad as all the legal substances such as tabacco and alcohol then why is marijuana illigal?can that question be answered appropriatly with good reason?
the people who make the laws are not able to control the sales and amounts imported in a way to create the monopoly on cannabis, the only profitable way is to control it, and if they cant effectively control it when it is so easily found, for a fraction of the price they would sell it for. if the government could lift this dark cloud away from our country we would be 1 step closer to free thinking on a massive scale. people who are baked tend to question authority allot more and pick up on plans… it could be my joint-induced paranoid state of mind at play now, but i think it has been kept illegal buy the bilderburg group, then ones who really run the world. they are real and i think iv gone of topic, sorry. bilderburg group- google it
Ganza should be set free. the president needs to smoke weed to clear is mind from all his nonsense he is catching on. Free ganza and your lifes will get better. JAH Bless!
I thought it was the new South Africa – but seems like they are hanging onto old white mens laws. So ridiculous.
If marijuana was decriminalised like tabacco and alcohol. Meaning that over a certain age you are allowed to use is, less children will be smoking it then. Not to mention that marijuana has the most amazing medical use. Recent studies show that a compound in cannabis cure cancer.
South africa needs to start following countries and states and start legalising or decriminalising.
Everyone give this flick a watch it’s a real eye opener for the uninformed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqJO-RFQfHk
I smoke weed every evening.
I haven;t had alcohol since i was 18
7am-5pm job.
6 days per week.
100% committed, responsible and hard working.
I care about everyone around me.
I have never committed a crime, nor have I harmed anyone.
But i should probably go to jail, because weed is illegal. I should have a criminal record for the rest of my life because I smoke a plant. I should be labeled a criminal and not be allowed to work another job.
This is all because some rich white men from the paper industry in the early 1920′s were able to spread propaganda and sway politicians’ decisions, all for the sake of money. All merely aimed at restricting hemp to be farmed for paper and textiles, so they could make more money.
Apparently the famous Louis Armstrong was the devil and was not a good person because he smoked weed. “Black people and Mexicans are smoking the devil’s weed, and becoming violent monsters.”
One thing we know for sure is:
1. Alcohol does not cause violent behavior.
2. Alcohol has never claimed innocent lives on the road.
3. There have not been numerous reports of wife bashing, child abuse, domestic violence in general, all due to the intoxication of some alcoholic.
4 Tobacco is not grown in radio-active fertilizer known to be the leading cause of lung cancer amongst smokers, (my grandad was a heavy smoker and lived till 92 on “old school” unfiltered cigarettes).
5. Highly profitable pharmaceuticals like aspirin and Tylenol are not dangerous AT ALL.
6. The studies that stated “Marijuana kills braincells” were not administered by suffocating monkeys by pumping nothing but smoke into masks and left on for 5 minutes straight. (Because everyone knows that braincells wont die when someone gets deprived of oxygen)
Sarcasm aside, prohibition is the biggest cause of under aged involvement in illegal substances.
Why go try buy alcohol where you need a fake ID when you can go to your nearest drug dealer and get a bag of weed. Who knows, maybe he will be kind enough to introduce you to heroin, tik and cocaine too!
If you think im talking rubbish, I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. I will even offer R20 000 to any person who can prove that prohibition has actually curbed drug use in any country.
Think about it. We are all blinded by what we are shown is normal.

the problem with the pro legal side is they never have well structured arguments. its always like p0tz iz goooods JAH BLESS! this is the best way to lose the battle. It does not reduce productivity, i am a engineering student and i have not become less productive on the contrary it has helped me cope with stress of university. Pot is illegal for the following reasons
1 – government cannot make profit from it and will in fact lose money because pot is so easy to grow and will replace wood as a production
2 – the government has made pot to be this monster that it really is not. I ask u to please find somebody who becomes a danger from weed and not a danger from the same level of alcohol. Like GunJana said the test was done on monkeys deprived of oxygen. If the same was done for 5 minutes with carbondioxside they would die! so by powers of deduction that means that co2 is more harmful than weed! (guess they should tax and illegalise breathing too)
3 – Pot is seen as a narcotic (opium derived) this is an utter lie as there is no opium involved in the growing or production of weed
there are many more reasons those 3 are just the ones that really grind my gears.
Point of interest… If say x amount of people die from obesity and y amount of people die from od on weed. and x>y that makes KFC more harmful than weed
LAdys and gents this is then true because obesity does cause more deaths than weed.
the thing is once a ban has started it is difficult to turn it around look at *** marriage only because there were enough people educated enough to back them and it did not have the stigma on it that weed has did it become legal. so people really sign petitions get out there and do something about it instead of bitching on forums about it
I have a boyfriend who smokes weed, twice a day. At first I thought it is not right from where I grow up, it was illegal. But now I am studying this. Marijuana does not do any harm to his body! All it does, kills braincells. I agree with gunjana 100%. I don’t smoke it! But it is a natural thing! And it goes out of your system after a few hours! Don’t know why does they say it is illegal! Maybe some idiot did something stupid in the past and now we must pay the price! It is not bad, but it is not good either! But the guys who smokes weed does not bother anyone. They smoke it on their own time! They don’t change of their personilities! They just become happy! Thats all… Disagree with me if I am wrong!
Enough lies about cannabis.please its really starting to p me off.
the sun can cause a heat stroke,cancer,sun burn.
the sun is very dangerous if its looked at with a naked eye it makes your eyes red.
lets ban the sun then. no wait lets ban the snake its far more poisonous then weed.
weed is 100% non – toxic

*60 000 deaths are attributed to caffeine every year (yes stupid house wife ladys who drink coffe and hate weed,who take all types of
dieting tabs and vitamin tablets that damage your kidney)
why cant i grow my plants without trouble.
fuc% this it makes me to angry.
let me ***** grow gods plants in peace.
Hi, It has been quoted many times that mj has not caused any deaths. While I am pro legalising it, I must disagree with the statement. Mj has surley cause at least a few deaths. The first time I ever smoked mj, I drove while high and I almost caused an accident. My causes the heart rate to increase significantly. Surely this has caused some heart attacks in people who were on the verge of a heart attack. Lets be objective here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?f.....sC4IZhlx4I Please take a few moments to learn about weed and if it is bad for you thanks.
holy cow!!!!! yeah weed doesn’t kill, we are the most peace loving people and we get hammered, nice!!. let’s just keep on rebelling we will be free and there is no one who can stop us, dagga will be free, I will see to it, if our stupid government stands in our why we will take them down. point is no one can stop us. I hate the fact the people are giving dagga a bad name, new test shows it actually stimulates brain growth (O yes yes ) people should read more and then make up their minds,
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but our weed can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause only weed can stop the time…
Many question why marijuana is illegal in the first place, my question is, how would it bee different in SA if it was legalised and what would be the affect on SA’s youth??
Thanks once again for this inaccurate report on marijuana. I highly doubt these stats are correct.
Mental health problems? Please elaborate…
Also explain CBD content, and the CLEAR evidence supporting the anti-effects of Wasting syndrome, Glaucoma, Alzheimer’s, Aids and the list goes on!
It promotes the death of free radical cell’s and it feels awesome doing it.
Screw the Media, Synthetic companies, Pharmaceuticals, Logging companies, Petrol and Oil companies.
Open your eyes…
Viva la Hemp revolution!
This is a very irresponsible, ignorant and misleading piece of information on the cannabis plant, i suggest the write should go and make research about this plant before he turns himself into a complete idiot, doctors with PHDs have made extensive research for many years on this plant, and everyday negative myths are being debunked.

February 20, 2009 at 7:37 amYou forgot to mention nicotine addiction. You also forgot to mention the consequences of “the habitual abuse” of a legally obtainable substances such as alcohol and cigarettes as well. And no, I’m not defending abuse in any form or way. Substance abuse remains substance abuse and until we see that – and I mean really see that for what it is, we will remain in the throes of a social crisis.
Look at Castle lager renewing their support for our national rugby team so they can advertise alcohol through a mechanism meant to promote healthy living: sport.
