This is what Barack Obama said on World AIDS Day, 2006, after a visit to South Africa:
“We know how to save people’s lives. We know the medicine is out there and we know that wealthy countries can afford to do more.
That’s why it was so frustrating for me to go to South Africa, and see the pain, and see the suffering, and then hear that the country’s Minister of Health had promoted the use of beet root, sweet potato, and lemon juice as the best way to cure HIV.
Thankfully, the South African government eventually repudiated this, but it’s impossible to overestimate how important it is for political leaders like this to set a good example for their people.
We should never forget that God granted us the power to reason so that we would do His work here on Earth – so that we would use science to cure disease, and heal the sick, and save lives. And one of the miracles to come out of the AIDS pandemic is that scientists have discovered medicine that can give people with HIV a new chance at life.
We are called to give them that chance. We have made progress – in South Africa, treatment provided to pregnant women has drastically reduced the incidents of infants born with the infection.”

if people have been wondering about ways in which President Obama change could positively impact the problem-solving process in Africa, this is an illustration.
Thank God you have brough the angle to the world, please God guide Obama he is to work on the heartless people in this world who let people die when they can do some thing to save them.
Aids the entire world knows it has a cure now but where is the cure.
people are making it business or God put mercy on to Africa.
President elect of the United States it is going to happen to you. They are going to put words in your mouth. What they told you was what they say to discredit the best president South Africa has ever had.
What does an apple a day do? It keeps the doctor away Mr. Mbeki and Dr. Manto know very well that HIV has no cure. It had to do with nutrition.
If I remember well there were cases where the use of those pills(ARVs)made the patients very sick in that they died early than when they did’nt use them.
I believe the ARVs used today have been improved. The are cases where the patients cant take the pills anymore and rather let God take them.
Obama has sound head on his shoulders!
Lets hope the grandeur of presidency doesn’t cloud his judgment!
Whatever happens, there is just no way he can be as big a failure as dubya is!

Please commenter’s. If you don’t know the intimate details about what you are passing commentaries – DON’T COMMENT!!!!
Anyone with half a brain knows that optimal nutrition is critical in the prevention of disease!!
However, it is NOT nutrition that causes HIV. Get with the program!! HIV is caused by inappropriate sexual behaviour & NO!!! Taking a shower after intercourse with an HIV positive person WILL NOT help…. EVER!!
Also, PLEASE commenter’s, once you have written your comment READ what you have written/typed. Most comments are difficult to read, grammar & spelling are rubbish.
Anyone who thinks that Barack Obama is likely to be a bully or a problem for Africa needs to see a Psychiatrist FAST!!
Oh…. and PLEASE don’t call him a colour. He’s an American.

Some of the comments above are indicative as to why Africa is such a problem continent
Commenter Rogers.
You are misinformed. HIV does NOT have a cure.
No one is hiding an HIV cure from Africa.
South Africa has one of the best HIV programs in the World – just as well! South Africa has the worst AIDS footprint on the planet!!
President Elect Obama does NOT have a responsibility for repairing the problems in Africa. We Africans have that responsibility. This starts with looking in the mirror and asking – WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP??
America is going to come right now, because it has the President it needs – a trustworthy, very smart & intelligent man!! South Africa will also come right, when we wake up and elect a trustworthy, smart & intelligent President.
There is no place for emotion here just logic. Why? Because we should want to hand over an Africa we are proud of, to our children and our grandchildren. That’s why.

whatever ya’ll say. early ARVs killed people. HIV patients were doing well without them then after taking the damn pills their health started detoriating “quicker”.
Its not wrong to point out what people on the ground witnessed with this AIDS thing. people in the townships, not suburban folks.
Yes, ARVs maybe new and improved now, but not back then. When Manto said something about ARVs people went insane, but not the people in the townships who saw what they were doing.
Even to say that Early ARVs were not that great, people will want my head, want me dead, even though many people have witnessed it. but those who haven’t seen their consequences got a lot say about things they don’t know.
ARVs have been improved, great but back then something bad was happening to those who used then and Manto got flamed by people who knew nothing. people who haven’t seen a goddamned thing.

Does Obama condemn nitrition?
What is that? A daily dose of nitrogen?
I’m all for beetroot and stuff. It’s a cheap way to enforce natural selection. Let the strongest survive. Let the weak and stupid die. Viva Mbeki viva.
Any future president of South Africa should learn from American Elections:
*He should know his facts straight and clear.
*He should not sing “war songs” but should encourage peace.
*He must not run away from debates but be strong in word and in deed.
*His life should be blameless and clean moral.
*He must not have a record of women abuse and corruption.
Mbeki and Manto will pay for their sins one way or the other. Most of us lost our brothers, sisters and colleagues because they were denied access to the ARVs. To make matters even worse for me was when Mbeki told us that HE DID NOT KNOW ANYONE who was HIV and that proved to me that he was not living here in SA where we saw everyday people dying from AIDS. AIDS kills whites, blacks indians and coloures and its not a blacks only desease just like some ppl might like to imply. I have seen well educated Professors and Doctors dying from the desease.
1 Obama is not the messiah!!!
2 I like that about natural selection.
3 MAIPHEPI please get a life..
I bet my last cent: Manto will join Lekota’s party. She still has and will always have the blood of 300 000 and more on her hands. What is the position of churches on these numbers?
I hope you’re wrong Hopeful. She needs to join ZANUPF or SACP, but please not COPs.
I believe that if we are in a posiyion to help a person to survive and we do not do what we can, then we are as guilty as if we comitted murder. Soooooo, Manto better start making amends. Although is it not possible to plead insanity in certain cases????????
What happenned to no personal attacks?
It seems clear that those in favour of killing off HIV patients with poison ARV’s are always negatively emotive and lack compassion and understanding.
Lekota and Shilowa will not be so stupid to let Manto join them. They will lose half their support in an instant, starting with me.
HIV causes AIDS not Mbeki. If only Mbeki had stated that loudly and clearly and started his government’s crusade for HIV prevention and the treatment roll out to those that were infected, the course of HIV epidemic in South Africa may have been very different. It should not take a rocket scientist to revisit that. But to blame Mbeki for the deaths of AIDS patients when HIV caused AIDS (now it is Mbeki’s best defense) and irresponsible sexual behaviour (either due to ignorance or deliberately) including that of the founder of TAC, who I am told (open to correction) was a male prostitute (and that is how he acquired HIV) before becoming this glorified activist calling for treatment. Unfortunately, a generation of children born to HIV infected mothers were due to the lack of treatment during the early part of the Mbeki era. Clearly Mbeki’s decision not to accept the scientifc consensus that HIV causes AIDS was a blunder. Furthermore, his lack of attention to the problem and assigning resources to treat the problem was improper, especially to prevent the mother to child transmission. His not using his presidential office to educate the masses and to make them modify their behaviour to prevent HIV infection was a mistake and a lost opportunity. But politicians do make blunders (ask the Americans about Bush) because of their beliefs or other reasons (poor advice from peers) that cost lives. To try to bash a fallen President and dump all the blame and tarnish his place in history based on a single issue is being unreasonable, unfair and illogical. Equally unreasonable is the case that was filed in the International Court of Justice at Hague against the TAC leader for promoting allegedly toxic anti-HIV treatment. South Africa needs to move beyond Mbeki, TAC and failed South African researchers attempts to come up with a vaccine against HIV and to do everything possible to fight HIV and AIDS with all its might and the resources on hand. The new Health minister has a fresh opportunity to do just that and to learn from the mistakes of the past instead of rehashing the blame game. The HIV patients are suffering and they urgently need all the attention and treatment that they can get. Those who are not infected they need infusion of a dose of education (the best current alternative to vaccine) that will urge them to take all measures possible including the use of condoms and physical barriers to stop the spread of HIV and to stay HIV free. This way they do not have to try to test the government’s efficiency at dealing with the epidemic of HIV and start a new round of blame game.
Who cares who said what and when they said it if we cannot learn the lessons from it.
When will we all wake up? HIV/AIDS is a disease caused by highly immoral behavior. Cause and effect you know, all actions have re-actions, all decisions have consequences….. something we all seem to have forgotten!!!! If ever a cure is found, it will not stop the disease itself, only the effects. This disease will never be eradicated if we do not start to apply basic age old principles designed by a power Higher and Mightier than all of us to protect us all, no matter what religion, colour, creed, race etc, we are from.
After all, this world was created for all of us, the sun rises upon all of us in the morning and sets upon all of us at night.
It is so easy to be negative, so easy to judge, so easy to insult and so easy to hate.
Can all this BAD energy not be turned within ourselves to do something first within ourselves to effect a positive change and then to teach our children, family and friends the basic rules of self discipline, social discipline and responsibility to ourselves, the environment, and the world.
Let us stop looking for people to blame and ridicule because of our own iniquities. Let us take responsibility for our own actions, assume humility and then maybe, just maybe we will be able to live long, healthy, happy, abundant and prosperous lives.
Remember, we are all dependent on Grace.
There for the Grace of God go I.
Man is supposed to have evolved and spread from Africa, and if we accept that as true then Africa may be the last frontier of mankind’s last battle for survival . If we do not win this battle then in less than 50 years mankind may be extinct .Concept of mass death would be 1666 and the Black Death. I have dealt with Merck and Pfizer and others, see website http://www.cancerfraudbadbiotech.com and see research proposals. Dr Faucci has said we need new ideas but they do not ask for new people but keep protecting their jobs and believe that there is no urgency. I presented work at U of Guelph as early as 1992(?) stating cancer and AIDS are evolutionary control mechanisms that are not normally seen.Unless we accept this and do the research from such a view no changes will come and mankind will perish.Species have gone extinct before, so why not man? Read the Sections Mass Extinction/SARS and the appropriate parts of the Red Section on my website http://www.cancerfraudbadbiotech.com and see if you agree. Stopping AIDS in Africa is vitally important to the world . I tried to tell Mr. Gates that, but his people only wrote back saying they already had researchers working on this but from the results was that good enough. I would like to solve the problem, but like yourselves, no one seems to care. Thank you. E.A.Greenhalgh
Hey we can talk the whole day, but it will be logical to look closley to these matters.
Let’s say Mr. Mbeki denied that HIV/ AIDS exists and there is blood in his hands… well one would wonder, after so many accusations against Mr. Mbeki, everybody or almost everyone knew that HIV exists and it kills people, but did that stop them from contracting? And why? ARV’s are available now, is the number of infected people decreasing or the numberof dying people with HIV decreasing…?
Yes… there is no justification to human death, but we should try to see things the way they are and not perpetuate other people’s opinions which might not be so true.
All that is important here is that, Zazi ukuba ungubani (Know yourself) and ubenomqolo (have a backbone), stick to what you believe in and you will Beat HIV/AIDS.

Are you serious???????
Do you really believe civilization spread from Southern Africa??????
PLEASE WAKE UP
And while you are at it give me proof of the evolution you are talking of
Sko!
Are YOU serious?
There is far more proof, volumes of knowledge and common sense, that support the fact of evolution. You show me one ounce of proof that god exists, beyond the gumph about having faith, nyagga nyagga.
Your religion is an industry like any other and vies with prostitution as being the oldest business. Its patsies like you that feed this industry, being taken again and again by the carnival con man.
Maybe civilisation spread from Africa because the intelligent ones emigrated. According to scientists only about 50 families actually managed to escape.
Larry,,
Standing 6ft 5 and half inches in my socks and 236 lb in weight and You want to have the guts to call me a patsie???……. Get lost.
But the god you speak of is probably some other god , as my GOD is the God that you can thank that you even exist to-day. Maybe He should have given you a nice black skin like the rest of us, maybe then you would appreciate Him.
Proof you say. I told you to do a Google search o “Creation in the 21st Century? you will find plenty of proof for what you are looking for.
I’m still praying for you Larry.
DEPUTY leader of the Independent Democrats Simon Grindrod yesterday joined the Congress of the People in a bid to “make history by unseating the ANC”.
Zodwa , where are you ?
do you think ANC can beat ID DA UDM COPE ?
Zuma will not win
Former defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota will get state bodyguards until next week, after which he must motivate why he needs them for longer.
Zuma tactics
Greetings all
If obama did indeed say above abt SA or maybe i should Say Former President Mbeki then it is indeed very dissappointing statement, he needs to get his facts wright, Mbeki is indeed a cautious man who dont just fall for anything that is presented before him, we realy are tired of people making money out of our countries, drug companies especialy, look at how most of europeans can sanction the countries in this continent for people to go hungry and later bring food for relief, and they are appear to be life savers in the eyes of the majority,as they are also quick to advertise how they help us, this is pathetic we need to watch out for this kind of strategy,
so everyone please gets your facts wright, know why Mr Mbeki took time assess and analys the situation abt ARV,
why should we always just for temporary solution, is it not time for us to chew before we swallo.
Great love upon all of you

Am I reading a revised edition of the story? I do not see Mbeki’s name mentioned anywhere in the article. Please, someone point out to me. If not, guys, let us leave Mbeki alone to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. He worked hard for you and me (white or black). We have more contemporary issues on hand to focus on. As for you Ray, it would do you a whole lot of good if you were to report issues objectively. I see only the Health Minister’s name in the article. You did not think that Manto is a big enough fish to sell did’nt you? For that reason, you had to mislead readers by mentioning Mbeki’s name. Shame on you.
eagreenhalgh, I know my Redeemer liveth! You are the first proof to that. He died even for His enemies, including those that pierced Him, and those that are still denying Him.
Still Mbeki has innocent blood in his hands, whether you like it or not. I hope hell fires are expecting him anytime soon.

November 7, 2008 at 8:52 amThank you for highlighting this statement. It should have been on the front page of every newspaper and magazine in South Africa at the time.
Now that he has the world’s biggest ‘bully pulpit’ his words may carry more clout.
