The Wild Frontier

Politics. News. New media. Old media.
Posted: November 7th, 2008 | By Ray Hartley

AT last, Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa’s breakaway movement has a name: The Congress of the People. Or does it? The ANC may successfully challenge this name because it derives from the ANC meeting in 1955 where the Freedom Charter was drafted. Either Shikota have calculated that they could benefit from a court action against the ANC – think of the many witnesses and testimony claiming that they truly represent the spirit of the Freedom Charter as a trial drags on – or they think they can get away with this one.
Now picture the courtroom … “In the matter between the ANC and the Congress of the People ….”

It does not matter what the new party is called. It will be well supported.

The CONGRESS OF THE PEOPLE (COP) is inclusive, personable, and gives the feeling of open arms ready to embrace.

Thank you South Africa. You have come of age.

I think the whole naming chaos has stolen Terror’s moment in the spotlight as the man who initiated the break up of Africa’s oldest party.

The naming thing does make for a fantastic afternoon cartoon though – check out http://www.wonkie.com/2008/11/.....arty-name/ for a Friday smile :)

I hope that the ad writers for Shikota will have a field day with the Cops vs Robbers theme. I think that the leaders of the COP should invite bloggers to generate a string of one liners that COP can use to spread the message to the electorate.

Maybe Ray Hartley can put a panel together to adjudicate the entries and AVUSA can sponsor a couple of prizes for the winners.

Good one El,even with the name they should have consulted us mere mortals on blogs,we could have saved them endless meetings and head scratching he he he he.I also hope anc is serious about contesting this name,we need as much publicity as possible, especially given the huge mistake with first name.

El,on the matter of one-liners,im not sure how much effect they will have given the huge rate of illiterate,non-political population and fact that voting is still a beauty contest/pop idol for them.In the spirit of one-liners though, heres a few suggestions i have:Brightness vs Darkness, which do u chose?Homo Sapiens vs Neanderthals, do u miss the stone ages?Phd vs Woodwork,is this…Ok maybe its good i didnt chose advertising as a career, can i hear more from u guys.

Dont worry Zabs. Afrikak is talking about the ANC.

People of THE CONGRESS OF THE PEOPLE. There is only one pay-off line.

YES WE CAN!!!!

It embodies everything that needs to be done and all that is possible. We can have Obama as our mascot.

99.9% of COP supporters would not condone or support violence at political rallies. If the ANC was serious about this, their marshalls would be on the lookout for trouble makers and take photographs of them so that they can be identified later.

I would not put it past the ANCYL,however, to infiltrate their own rallies with \”agent provocateurs\” to stir up trouble and blame it on COP. This would then give the the license to create massive problems at all COP rallies as a form of \”pay-back\”.

Intolerance across Africa is endemic. Let\’s show the world that we can be different.
