THE political war between Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki, which has rent the ANC asunder is continuing in the Constitutional Court. Mbeki today filed papers responding to Zuma’s papers and asserting once more that he disagrees with the court’s finding that he interfered with the prosecution of Zuma.
Said Mbeki:
“It is about the violation of constitutional rights and principles.
It relates to the fact that I (ie in my personal capacity, in my
capacity as President of the Republic of South Africa, in my
representative capacity as Head of the National Executive, and as a
person acting in the public interest) was not given the opportunity to
be heard with respect to the findings and conclusions that underpinned
the decision arrived at in the Court a quo.”
The stage is now set for South Africa’s biggest hitting lawyers to slug it out before the highest court in the land in what will be the biggest legal showdown in this country’s political history.
