I was an early adopter when it came to amazon.com and have been buying books, DVDs and CDs online for more than ten years now. (Don’t get me wrong, I also use bookstores such as Exclusives, its just that some things are hard to find in SA.) In all that time, I have experienced only one lost delivery which was promptly replaced by Amazon, who have a very progressive policy on this matter.
No problems until now, that is.
Two orders from May failed to arrive. I informed Amazon of this and they sent replacements. The replacements have arrived, but are being held up at customs for some inexplicable reason. Someone there called Thandi wanted invoices from me. I faxed through the invoices. A month has passed and nothing has happened. I have tried ringing Thandi up on the number supplied, with no joy. It just rings and rings.
Now I fear the worst for my parcels. The ocassion on which I planned to give my four-year-old the Daisy book Tiger Ways has come and gone. And the 3.10 to Yuma has been subjected to unseemly delays.
What is my next move? I think I should maybe drive to the airport and find this mysterious office where they hold things up until they see invoices – a practice not used over the last ten years when I have simply paid the (outrageous) tax on imported books at my local Post Office.
It makes me doubt the sincerity of the Post Office CEO, Motshoanetsi Lefoka, who has claimed there is no problem with Amazon deliveries. (Read an astonishing interview on My Broadband here)
