HOLLYWOOD is returning to its blockbuster glory with the release of the Batman movie, The Dark Knight.
The movie has grossed $155.34 million in its first weekend, eclipsing Spiderman 3 and setting a new record for the movie industry.
And it is another milestone for comic books which can now count several of the top grossing movies of all time among their number.
Part of the movie’s appeal is the mystique of the late Heath Ledger, who appears in his final acting role – by all accounts a superb performance that might win him a posthumous Oscar nomination.
The Dark Night opens in South Africa on Friday.

Ray it’s hardly Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight. Ledger appears far less than many others in the cast.
Mike – I know. But the hype around Ledger is what is turning a blockbuster in a super-blockbuster … ?
Sure the Dark Knight did get a lot of attention before Ledgers death but from my experience it got talked about way more after. I believe that it is because of Ledger that this happened. No one knew how many parts he would be in.
I think the films work so much better than a lot of other superhero films because Sam Raimi has made the films appear as though the true story behind the myths of the comic books and has packed the films full of themes which hold it altogether. Also the direction is spot on and all the shots just seem like images from the comic books. The CGI team must be the best in the world too because it really is visual entertainment of the highest degree. See it, switch off your mind and enjoy it.
