YESTERDAY we launched our brand new multimedia portal and one of the first items placed for viewing was a slide show of pictures of the violence against foreigners.
By last night, the slide show had been downloaded more than 20 000 times, testimony to the rapid growth of multimedia news consumption in this country.
But we could not celebrate. There can only be mourning when such downloading involves images of an innocent man burned to death purely because of his nationality.
This scene should never have occurred. But it did and we hope that in some small way we have shocked the nation into action.

As someone who’s travelled the length and breath of our beautiful continent, I’m dismayed and disgusted at the level of hatred directed at our fellow Africans.

The recent spate of killings and attacks are a shame and drawback to our thriving democracy and poses a serious threat to national security, economic development and African unity.

I’m perturbed that our law enforcement agencies and the political leadership have allowed this senseless campaign to go on for so many days.

it’s also questionable that these acts erupted right under the noses of the National Intelligence Agency.

All I can say is that many things are at stake now for South Africa. We are just months away from hosting 2010, and then this is allowed to happen? Mr President, please use some iron fist methods to clamp down on this monster called Xenophobia. We also know that criminals have also hijacked this xenophobic campaign. Let’s not allow our human rights culture to blind us and lead us into hell. if it means deploying the army and declaring a state of emergency, then do so. We voted you into power. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Many elements within our country and beyond would enjoy to see our country also wasting down the drain, just like Zimbabwe. They will be more than happy to get two (Zim and S.A.) for the price of one. Please act now Mr President and dispel the myth that you’re a lame-duck president and forever see all your efforts to restore Africa’s pride, her dignity and self sufficiency go down the tubes. Your legacy is in your hands.
