HERE’S relief for parents whose pre-school children talk to themselves: It’s okay, they’re just thinking aloud.
A study by Adam Winsler of George Mason University has found that “5-year-olds do better on motor tasks when they talk to themselves out loud (either spontaneously or when told to do so by an adult) than when they are silent.”
And there’s more, says a report on wired.com.
Winsler advises parents to “listen to the private speech of kids. It’s a fantastic window into the minds of children.”
He went on to suggest that teachers tolerate kids talking to themselves in class.
