THE battle for nomination as Democratic presidential candidate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama has been followed keenly around the world.
Whoever wins this contest will take on Republican John McCain for the position of US President, an office which has lost its lustre under the curatorship of George W Bush.
South Africans are fond of mocking US politics and the money it takes to campaign for office in that country.
But we would learn from the transparency of the nomination process, its involvement of ordinary people and the grilling candidates have had to endure.

Senator Obama has a huge white and black following. Ironically polls have shown his supporters are better educated and better paid than those of Hillary Clinton. She has majority support in the Hispanic community.

They set a good example to aspiring office bearers. Unfortunately, the American sytem will allow neither of the two to be President. The fact that there appears to be no winner emerging between the two aggravates the problem even further. The Democrats will look for a compromise nominee. In comes Al Gore. The establishment and the global community has elevated him to the lofts because of his climate change campaign. He also holds credentials of having been Vice President. He spent no dime in the campaign. Perhaps Obama may be his Vice President should the Democrats be victors at the generals. Al Gore is closely watching the developments.

I’d just like to point out that Senator Obama’s first name is spelled “Barack”, not “Barak”.

I agree that the US campaign process leaves much to be desired. The process, as grueling as it may be, is also very exciting. People of all races have come out to vote in record numbers…a true testament that America is ready for change!
