The all time grandmaster of ROCK

By gordo | 4 August 2009

What story do I tell about this legend named Rick Rubin?
Lets start here:
He’s the most important producer of the last 20 years. In 2007, he was listed among Time magazine’s 100 most influential People in the world.
He has won numerous awards & they’re gonna keep on coming.

Born, Frederick Jay ‘Rick’ Rubin, March 10, 1963 in Lido Beach, New York. He is of Jewish decent. His the son of a shoe wholesaler and a housewife.
He was unpopular @ school among other musicians, due to his complete lack of musical ability, beyond a few rudimentary guitar chords.
Can you believe this man doesn’t play instruments?
He doesn’t read music, nor write lyrics & has no idea what the knobs on a mixing board do.
He simply knows what works! & His resume speaks for itself.

What do the following have in common:
LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, The Cult, Jay Z, Slayer, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Mick Jagger, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, AC/DC, System of a down, Audioslave, Neil diamond, Linken Park, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Dixie Chics, Jakob Dylan, Metallica, Weezer, Green day, Gossip:

They’ve all had albums and songs produced by this LEGEND.

His skill is merging rap and rock. But he does more!

My admiration for this legend came while watching ‘Funky Monks’, the making of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers “Blood sugar sex magik”.

After seeing him in Jay Z’s classic ’99 Problems’ video, I realized, this man is more than a master!

Rubin is a musician serving as the original DJ of the Beastie Boys (DJ RR).
He co founded Def Jam Records along with Russell Simmons and later founding American Recordings.

Rubin is also the most widely accomplished record producer of the past 20 years, getting career-best work out of everyone from the Dixie Chicks to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Justin Timberlake–all of whom were vying for Album of the Year at the 2008 Grammys, where he won Best Producer of the year.

He’s able to achieve such fame, largely because his teddy-bear sensitivity defies every stereotype of his profession.

He was to Johnny Cash what Tarrentino was to Travolta; he made him cool again…
Once you’ve watched that clip, if you’re interested, you have to watch Jonny’s version of HURT, it’s possibly one of the greatest videos of our time! Directed by Mark Romanek (see future feature)

RR is a white man in a black man’s world.. His style. His attitude. His rhythm!

This icon enjoys long walks on the beach, sushi dinners & hugs that warm the corners of the soul.

To back up my idea of this legends attitude, check out the interview with Esquire magazine:

Go Rick go!

Here’s a little bit to back up what I’ve said about this champion:

His latest project for the band Gossip, album, ‘Music for men’ is by far one of the best albums of the year. Check it out.

He’s currently Co- head of Columbia Records.
