GoodTimes arrived in Durban for the first Sunday Times reader event at Harvey’s Restaurant in Morningside on Tuesday evening.

What a beautiful setting, what a fabulous turn out, fantastic food complemented with an exquisite selection of wines presented by Zevenwacht. The evening was hosted by our Sunday Times Travel & Food editor, Andrew Unsworth along with drinks columnist Neil Pendock, chef/owner Andrew Draper of Harvey’s Restaurant and Jacques Viljoen, winemaker at Zevenwacht.
The ants flew, the wine flowed, the food astonished and the patrons partied at the very first GoodTimes visit to Durban hosted at Harvey’s Restaurant with wines from the Zevenwacht estate.
It was a night worth remembering with Canapés and Zevenwacht Sauvignon Blanc served on the pavement opposite Mitchell Park and set the standard for what was to follow: A broad selection of wines, perfectly paired with food that included a fascinating asparagus plate of asparagus mousse, soup and salad; stuffed chicken; a goats cheese mille fueille’d between candied butternut tuiles and the most decadent chocolate brownies imaginable.
Neil Pendock, Sunday Times wine writer and author of The People’s Guide – a new wine guide that is as unpretentious and energetic as Pendock himself – presented copies of his book to a handful of lucky diners. Wine maker Jacques Viljoen was as generous with his information as he was with his wine and ensured that no-one was given a chance to dehydrate. (The vote at our table was split between the Merlot and the Sauvignon Blanc). The solution is probably a case of each.
By 11.30 a couple of tables had started knocking back whiskeys, others were bonding with new best friends and the elderly among us were desperately seeking our designated drivers.
The pictures speak for themselves – we look forward to being back in Durban early in the New Year!
