A telling portrait of greed – a WalMart employee was killed yesterday in Long Island, New York, when what has been described as “out of control shoppers” broke down the store’s door, at the start of the traditional Black Friday (post-Thanskgiving) sales in the US.

The UK Guardian reports WalMart employees attempting to get to the injured man – who was caught in the steel doors – were “trampled” by the stampede of customers. Four other people including an eight-month pregnant woman were injured, and taken to hospital for observation.

Perhaps the most obscene aspect of this tragedy is that, when the store was forced to close for several hours – because of the death – customers “shouted angrily” and “kept on shopping”.

Complete anger and disgust compells me to respond. Another incident of the “American Dream”, the disregard of a human life, in order to perhaps save $100 on a television. Where does a society lose such control to trample a person to death and not just one person step on his body as he lay on the ground but rather hundreds. What is sooooo… ironic as the American self portrayal of “the land of freedom and opportunity”, whist in their attempts of achieving the “American Dream”, they have considerably contributed to the Global economic crisis, by being allowed to purchase homes, cars and vacations that are well beyond their economic capabilities. Then in order to get a good buy.. feel it is morally consciousable to trample a man to death… Wow… in order to quote Walt Disney ” the land of a million dreams”? thanks but no thanks.

A death. A store on fire. Nothing stops American consumerism.

This is so horrible. I work at a walmart in Georgia, and although, i missed it this year, i’ve been there for the blitz sale. It’s been crazy before, but i’ve never seen any real trouble.

why are people so crazy? save your money, stay home with family. a man is dead and his family will be without him for the holidays. I hope wasting money on cheap junk wasn’t really worth that for those people.

This truly does disgust me. These people were so concerned with making sure that their families have a good Christmas and now they are taking from the most important thing of the holidays. Family. Those people who did not stop do not deserve a Christmas. And they wouldn’t leave the store when they closed it! Congratulations, America…you’ve lost my respect.

I’ve been subjected to the idiocy and cupidity of the country of my birth and life for 1/2 century. I finally got out of there…wish I had done it decades ago.

I am completely shocked and repulsed by hearing of this. This is the kind of thing that happens in cartoons, not in real life. I hope people take time to think about this, and I hope whoever was involved in this feels DAMN GUILTY about what they did.

I will be praying for that mans family. And I hope to the gods that those others that were injured will be alright. I hope the woman has a beautiful christmas baby.

Large crouds pushing from behind do not know what is happening in front.
These things are common at religious gatherings where thousands of people gather in small spaces.

This happens in India, Mecca etc. – why not in America. What makes the USA people so special that this should not happen to them.

Crown control is a science and Walmart will have to apply better and safer organising in these events from now on. They are fully to blame for this man’s death.

Hey Larry, **** you. Face it, those shoppers were nothing but a bunch of worthless animals.

This happened in London, when a big furniture store opened on the border with a poor area.

They were appearing in gangs, pushing people out of the way and mugging families in the car park, for their sofas.

It gives us an idea of future life in Britain, now that there are less British!

I agree that unfortunate things happen and sometimes crowds get out of control, but this crossed the line. And, shoppers’ non-chalant attitude afterwards (walking through the crime scene with their plama screens in tow) speaks to how selfish we’ve become as a country. Was that man’s life really worth the $200 they saved? Whether the cops find out who did it, God knows and that man’s blood is on their hands.

Firstly I hope the store was shut down and the animals who busted into the store weren’t allowed to profit from their despicable actions.

Second I hope Walmart has their arse sued off and the people at the front of the crowd are publicly named and shamed at the very least… then sued.

Third, if it was as bad as it sounds what the hell is an 8 month pregnant woman doing amongst that crowd at 5am… AM.

Lastly – death to capitalism. This is one more example that capitalism has run its course and we need a new economic system that doesn’t destroy human morals.
