Let’s start with a bang! Yes, save for the color and a slight difference in the bodice detail, these two (Dior) dresses are absurdly similar. While J. Law gets some credit for wearing hers first (at the 2013 Golden Globes), Nyong’o looks like the most beautiful Christmas tree you’ve ever witnessed. In one of the most competitive Oscar categories of the season, actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o are neck-and-neck in the race for the best supporting actress prize.
A report published in Vanity Fair, takes a look at how J. Law came out of the gate strong, with a win at the Golden Globes, but Nyong’o has surged, picking up the SAG trophy and gaining the coveted, somewhat intangible momentum. But now even their styles are coming into comparison as the magazine looks at their garments from the past and present.
These two red dresses are right up there with these women’s most memorable looks. Lawrence’s Calvin Klein 2011 Oscars dress—which she wore after inhaling “a Philly cheesesteak and fries,” let’s not forget—is the one that put her on the fashion world map. Meanwhile, we hear no fewer than a hundred different cults have been formed committed to the worship of Nyong’o’s Ralph Lauren cape-dress from last month’s Golden Globes. Along the way this awards season, Nyong’o has become something of an “It girl,” scoring magazine covers left and right (including our own) and achieving “fashion darling” status.
Lawrence—though she generally demonstrates a blasé attitude toward fashion—also receives much attention for her red carpet frocks, if not for the accidents said dresses occasionally cause.
Wearing these super expensive, gorgeous, designer dresses all the time must get exhausting, right? (Nope, definitely not “right,” but just go with it.) Sometimes, even the most famous superstars just want to put on a comfortable jumpsuit, perhaps some minimal jewelry, and call it a day. While we eagerly wait to see what these two women wear on Sunday night, we thought we’d take a look back at their sartorial pasts, which include more similarities than you might expect.
