So, the Catholic Church is currently undergoing a pedophilia scandal, a bribery scandal, and pretty soon we will be hearing how the Pope assassinated John F Kennedy (I kid, I think.) Like something out of the Corpse Bride, skeletons are doing a jazzy number out of the papal closet.
The major anger here has not been the abuse of children – any organisation of sufficient size that takes care of kids is going to have that. It is emotive, but not strictly the real horror.
The real horror here is that after catching people abusing children, the Church covered it up and then put those people in a position to do it again, and again, and again.
The church put its reputation above the altar boy it was molesting.
None of this is new, so why do I say the Pope never ceases to disgust me? After the fallout from all of this, after the sheer horror of an organisation that claims to be some sort of international moral conscience – and for centuries was believed – did that…
The Pope came out and told off one cardinal for publicly accusing another cardinal of covering up abuse.
The Catholic Church’s position is apparently eternal.
