What got into Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s head?
His call, after winning the toss on Sunday cost his team victory.
He misread the wintry weather from the north-east, he misread the pitch.
He decided to bat when everything pointed to sending in the opposition.
And the Aussies cleaned him up.
The Indian team, along with coach Gary Kirsten and his assistants, will need to do some serious soul-searching after collapsing in Guwahati on Sunday to an Australian attack, shorn of Brett Lee, Peter Siddle, James Hopes.
Now that the Aussies have, against expectations, sewn up the series 4-2 with only the dead rubber to play at Mumbai on Tuesday.
No wonder Ricky Ponting looked smug after the win in the sixth ODI.
In spite of the final game being meaningless now, it has been a riveting series that has been a refreshing upliftment for the 50-overs game.
The winning margins in two of the games have also been narrow and kept us on the edge. The Aussie win at Vadodara by four runs was unexpected and the win in Hyderabad unexpected, especially because Sachin Tendulkar had appeared to set England up with his magnificent 175, which must rank as the best innings of the year in ODI cricket.
But worries remain for India. They bombed out of the Champions Trophy, failed to get a team into the play-offs of the Champions League, and now this. Let’s wait and see what the fallout will be.
