Soccer Euro 2008 Portugal GermanyIf you are lucky enough to catch a glimse of German midfielder Michael Ballack outside whatever hotel they will be staying in, he will be wearing a bullet-proof vest and under heavy security escort.

BaySecur, a security company that looks after the the German Football Federation (DFB) and their guests when the national team play away from Germany has wanred the country’s football stars to expect to wear bullet-proof vests if they venture away from the team hotel during the tournament.
BaySecur is one of the firms expected to be employed by the DFB while the team is involved in the tournament which runs from June 11 until July 11 when the final will be held at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium.
“The possibility for the players of moving outside of the hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum. Otherwise there must be a full escort: armed security guards and bullet-proof vests for the players,” BaySecur’s Guenter Schnelle told German magazine Sport-Bild.
I guess they will be wearing ear plugs as well during their games because of the vuvuzelas.

You must be joking, that is complete bullshit, you are trying to say that the British and Irish Lions wore bullet proof vests.

Well, can’t say this is an over-reaction. SA has a well-earned reputation for being more dangerous than Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan or Gaza. Who wants to go there voluntarily?

What, bunch of panzies! I live in South Africa and sure its a dangerous place, but keep your wits about you and its fine. I hardly expect criminals to take over a team bus, that’s asking to get caught.

They must have been advised by disaffected South African expatriates

The security company is blowing the crime situation in the country out of proportion. It is not necessary for visitors to wear bullet-proof vests. It is more dangerous to walk in German streets if you are black because of the skin-heads and neo-nazis.
