The world may be nuts about Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series but horror guru Stephen King is not impressed. In an interview with USA Weekend, King rubbished Meyer comparing her to Erle Stanley Gardner the author of the Perry Mason books who in King’s opinion, “was a terrible writer.” King also had a go at James Patterson and fellow horror writer Dean Koontz. King’s comments have sparked a wave of blog posts from Twilight fans who have called for “Twilighters” to send King bags of hate mail.

James Patterson – there’s a name to conjure with… I agree with King but don’t think he should have ‘rubbished Meyer’ in print.

I wish to enter the giveaway for R1000 worth of children’s books as I teach in an African school where the reading levels for Gr 7 are about that of Gr 2 – 3, so I was hoping to win a prize for the school to encourage a love of books among my learners and to encourage them to read.
The Exclusive Books Children’s book festival takes place in March
Many thanks, Janella Coyne

In the end who cares what King says…what really matters is what readers find enjoying to them. Everyone has their own taste. My sister loves King’s books…I hate them.
To each his own.

I’m not a big fan of Stephen King either, but he is a very well read and well rounded writer. His remarks on pop culture releases are usually quite good — look up his commentary on the Harry Potter series. Truth is, Ms. Meyer does not write all that well (something even she admits). But, she manages to tell the Twilight story in a way that provides a good, light (and fast) read. Her biggest accomplishment: that she came up with vivid, unforgettable characters — the secret to the entire series. They are so vivid that you find yourself reading even when the writing becomes downright clunky. Meyer’s a bit pompous on occasion, and her dialogue is not exactly sparkling. Still, you find yourself reading anyway. She has said in interview that she regards herself as a storyteller; that’s probably closer to the truth.

King’s books are only good for putting myself to sleep when I can’t seem to do it myself. They are boring, a drag and most of all I find them very unimaginative and bland.
Meyer suggests a modern teenage character with real life tragidy with a mix of fantasy. They are two totally different genres of books to begin with and anyone intelligent will understand that. Meyer is young adult fiction and King is listed under adult fiction ( or SNORE).
It takes somebody real low and jealous to write such rude things about another author, nobdy will think the same, nobody writes the same and people will have their preferences.

Stephen King is entirely correct about this ridiculous Meyer woman, and her imbecilic books, which are apparently intended to amuse people with the maturity of those 11-year old girls who still think they will one day grow up to be fairy princesses, or some damn thing. Stephenie Meyer is a lousy writer who writes garbage that is read by fools. The fact she has achieved no small measure of vocational success with her puerile literary endeavours is proof positive that we live in an age of decadence, degeneracy, and in a state of perpetual subservience to the ignorant impulses of the lowest common denominator. She is a living, breathing symbol of all that is wrong with contemporary America, much like, say, Brittney Spears, “reality” TV, Las Vegas, (c)rap “music,” grown men wearing platinum jewelry, Paris Hilton, Perez Hilton, grown women taking striptease classes, etc, etc., etc., ad nauseam, ad infinitum.

Would the last civilized person please turn off the lights?

My wife and daughter loved the books (except the 3rd one). Myself hates it.

Alice how old are you? Definitely not grownup. My 16 year old daughter read Stephen King’s Carrie this past week and enjoyed it.

Kevin, I totally agree with you. I am sick and tired of this superficial **** that’s dished up and poor people like Alice fall for it.

@Alice
Modern teenage tragedy is right! Everyday I’m confronted with the perplexing situation of how to deal with the mentally unstable vampires at my school, and with the pedophiliac werewolves obsessed with the newborns of teenagers. Man, it’s TOUGH being a teen these days.

I have to agree with Kevin. I read the first two books (well I gave up half way through the second one) after numerous recommendations from friends. My best friend and I are the only teenage girls we know who dislike the books.
The writing is painfully bad. It seriously lacks character development and the plot leaves much to be desired.
Even if a book isn’t great I usually finish it off. It’s the first time I remember actually giving up on a book.

Stephen King, on other hand is a magnificent writer.
