The premiere of the Broadway musical about Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician, composer, pioneer of afro beat music, human rights and political activist, Fela Kuti happened on Monday night at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
Funded by rapper mogul and businessman Jay-Z and Hollywood actor Will Smith who also helped produce the musical which celebrates the excellent and revolutionary music of Fela Kuti, as based on his life with music done by Antibals Afrobeat Ochestra. On Monday night, stars such as the rapper himself, Smith, Ben Stiller and Jimmy Fallon, walked the red carpet for the premiere.
“It’s an inspiration, about the power of music. Here’s a guy that’s on the other side of the world who was influenced by James Brown, who takes this thing and makes his own sort of genre of music. I just think it’s fascinating.” Jay-Z told MTV.
Kuti died in 1997 from Kaposi’s sarcoma.
