After months of not working and three months after the birth of her son David, Oscar-Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson says she is ready to get back to work.
Hudson who is also a singer of the hit Spotlight and received praise for her breakout role in 2006’s Dreamgirls, will play the wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, in a Darrell J Roodt’s upcoming drama titled Winnie.
According to several reports, Hudson will be heading to South Africa to shoot the film, based on Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob’s biography titled “Winnie Mandela: A Life”, where she will play the leading role as Winnie.
The film is said to be about Madikizela-Mandela’s ’s life during her years as Mandela’s wife, who fought for his release.
According to Variety, the film will go into production May 30, 2010 in locations including Johannesburg and Cape Town in the country. Filming will also take place on Robben Island, where anti-apartheid activist Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison after being convicted.
“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson told Variety.
“Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
