Awards can be a hit or a miss and this time after my horrid experience with the first Channel O’s I was in doubt of what to expect at the Carnival City.
From arriving to realise we were a more than an hour early, I was not too sure what to think but I sat to chat with friends as we set up camera equipment, booked our corner seats for the awards and munched on the yummy snacks that were being served.
After an hour of waiting, stars, nominees and the unknowing winners started to arrive on the red carpet. I was rather peeved off by the fact that there was an unnecessary order for the day, with ChannelO wanting to be the first to interview celebs from all over Africa. Meaning they all had to wait in line for the YFM twins Ntando and Hlelo Masina to interview them, with gatekeeper ladies ordering media not to be first to snap at the stars because Channel O had to get first preference. Absolutely unnecessary, I think you invite the media to come do their jobs because you want PR for the event, so why stop them from working? Next year they should scrap that.
Besides the carpet drama, the sit-down-dinner event started on a high note with MAMA awards winning HHP as an opening act, followed by a welcome note from the presenters of the awards, Kabelo Ngakane, Vuzu’s Nonhle Thema and the yummy Rhythm City actor Lungile Radu.
From time to time I felt lost on who was who in Africa because all I knew was Kenyan Wahu and her hubby Nameless, Nigeria’s DBanj and my personal favourite Neato C who also won an award, then of coarse I knew the locals Lira, Slikour, Uyanda Mbuli, Siyabonga Ngwekazi, JR and a few of the people.
The dinner which was great went by in a flash as the awards happened and it was really great to see that South Africa did win an award with Khuli from Morafe winning the best newcomer award, others nominated RJ Benjamin, Brian Temba and others with nothing. But hey, as the saying goes, its an honour to be nominated.
Congrads to all the winners, it was indeed a great night with loads of beautiful African people.
